87 f150 lights

got a 87 f150 and the lights quite working. they flickered a couple times and were fine in the time i was driving it. went back to it in a couple days and the lights wouldnt come on at all, no fliker no nothing. it also made a buzzing sound when you opened the driver door but that quite working at the same time. would anybody know where to start with it.

Other than a possible broken wire or bad ground, well, first check the fuses and relays. If they check out OK, then it is probably the dimmer switch itself. 87 has the multi-function switch on the column doesn't it? My 86 has the foot dimmer, I can't remember when they changed. But the multifunction switches did have more problems. Good luck and keep us posted.

Mark, remover the headlamp switch, take special
note to the wire plug in to the switch. You'll
find the plug will be melted at 1 or 2
connections. Purchase a new switch & a
replacement pigtail plugin. On the good wires
from the old orignial plug remove them one at
a time & reinstall them in the new pigtail
once you remove the new wire out of that plug.
I see no sense in replacing & cutting good
wires. Solder the connections You'll be fine..
The less cutting of wires the better the
connections will be. Use a paper clip to
remove the wire.

got another qestion. is there a way to tell if the switch is good or no and if all the fuses are good and such is there a good way of finding a broken or shorted out wire if you have no idea where it is. one more thing. would the buzzing sound of the door be linked in with the switch too because that quit working the same time the lights did.

Won't help answer the question, but your post reminded me of a time in the late '80's when I had my own shop.

A local fellow drove up one day with a 2 or 3 year old Chevy pickup I'm sure he'd bought new. He asked me, "How do you dim the headlights on this thing?"

And he'd worked for the U.S. Government Ag Service all his life.
