Have you seen one?

I was a country kid, but no strong farm background. I have a 50"s tractor I inherited and a Kubota. I recently saw a three-row cornpicker, don"t recall seeing one around here, but that is not the subject of my post. Another guy told me he had seen a four row self-propelled picker (not a silage chopper). Seen one? Who made them?

Yes they made self propelled corn pickers a guy down the road from the farm I work on has one but never ben close enough to it to see what kind it is. Pretty sure that it had a four rown head on it though. Its orange in clor so maybe Allis Chalmers or New Idea. Hope this helps.

Combines today have the ability to pick far more rows than 4, check out caseih.com. Almpst every manufacturer made 4 row pickers at one time or another. Jim

New Idea UNI system. Dad had one before we transitioned to combines. The husking and picking aspects of it was great. The UNI tractors units left something to be desired(they liked to self ignite, many other issues too).

I am not totally sure, but I seem to remember Minneapolis-Moline having a "unisystem" years ago also. The self propelled picker I remember was yellow.

A neighbor of mine had one. It sat in a field for 25 years or so before he scrapped it about 10 years ago.

I've got a Uni Harvester in the shed with a four row head and a husking bed on it, got a six row narrow head for it too. Theres a combine unit out in the weeds. You put on which ever system you need. Worked well on 150 bushel corn but doesn't work good on 180 bushel corn, not enough power or capacity. The Uni system included multiple attachment including planters, plows, and even snow blowers. The newer power units with cummins motors are sought after to be converted to truck loaders used in loading corn out of storage piles.

Slim - you said, "three-row cornpicker".

I guess you mean a pull type machine. I've never seen one either, although a guy I was with the other day mistook the three snouts on a two row picker to think it was a three row machine.

Four row self propelled machines were real common in our area (Southern Illinois), especially around the time farmers were switching from pull type to self propelled. Late 50's - mid 60's?? Some of the hill farmers still use four row machines.

You are right. They found a sucker in New Idea and peddled it to them in about 1963-64. Was teritory manager for NI. We all went to Indiana to see the new version. NI did a lot of cosmetic tin work. Called it restyling.

New Idea made a 331 narrow and a 338 wide row 3 row pull-type picker. They labeled their after 1965 pull-type pickers as "superpickers."

Alright!! Thanks for the picture. I'm a little wiser now. I guess these things worked best with a 6 row planter?

Slim - where are you in Southern Illinois? I think you told me once, but I've forgotten. I'm about 15 miles, as the crow flies, east of Chester.
