Disc Gang assembly question

I had a couple bearings go out on a 1010 Kewanee Disc, got bearings from Shoups and reassembled the gang with the old nut and end washer, it came loose after a couple rounds. I ordered a couple new spools to replace worn ones and a new dura tight end washer and reassembled, got it good and tight with a couple big pipe wrenches and worked about 15 acres with no problems. It got dark and I started working with the lights and next thing I know the nut had come off the shaft and its toast. What am I doing wrong? Any tips to keeping this thing together would be great.

no such thing as too tite when it comes to disc gangs...block of wood between blades and frame...36" pipe wrench and a 4' cheater pipe is what i use...make that nut squall a few times...make a couple rounds and repeat.

Last one I did, per advice of Grandpa was to put it together, tighten it as tight as I could.. Whack opposite end with BFH and repeat.. Do this until the nut seems to "stay tight", then mount the gang back on the disk and go to work.

My JD disk had a "lock tab", the Case I have now has a Castellated nut and cotter pin.

As for your wasted axle.. I had one break once.. I found one from a junk disc similar to mine, but the length was different.. Local weld shop fixed it right up for me. Think I paid $50 for the junk disc (and got a bunch of extra parts) and $25 to the weld shop.

lock tight also afer a few round i tell my customer stop re tighten. might have to do it a couple times i also like to put them on with a 3/4 inch impact wrench seem to work best

My disks have a washer with tabs that bend over the nut to lock them down. If all else fails, can you drill a hole thru nut and shaft and lock it down with a cotter key or roll pin?

the best way to keep disk gangs tight is to clean all mating surfaces of dirt paint and so forth tis means wire wheel all hubs spacers etc. then assemble and tighten the hell out of it at least 4 foot long wrenches oe big impact

+1 on the BFH, whack it a few times and tighten the nut, whack it a few more times a tighten again. Repeat until you can't tighten any more.

get a 1" drive breaker bar, 6 point socket to match your nut, and a 6 or 8 foot cheater pipe. get that nut TIGHT. my IH disk uses a locking tab to keep it tight.

Doulbenut thethe thing with a locknut between the nuts.Or put a small/short tackweld on the nut/shaft.you can later grind the weld off if needed.but-the nut will NOT come loose again

You did not have it tight. You will not get it tight with pipe wrenches alone in one setting. Like others have told you here. Tighten it as tight as you can. Then hit the other end of the axle as hard as you can with a sledge hammer several times. Then re-tighten the nut. Do this until the nut will not turn anymore.

Also take a small hammer an rap on the blades. When they are tight they will ring like a bell. When loose they sound like a ripe water melon kind of a thud. Start at the nut end and check every blad toward the other end. When you have it really tight they will all ring. The first few times the first blade or two will ring and the rest will not.
