Just finished delivering 2010 corn crop. Second best crop ever after 2008.(2009 was third best) Average yield right at 5 ton/acre dry shelled.-Meaning a consistently great yield considering shaded spots, wet spots, animal loss, little fields, etc. Selling Jan through Sep averaged $260/ton.
Then there's this years' crop...........

Amaizes me the way things vary across the US in the way things are sold.

They might talk about tons to the acre here in Iowa but they would be talking about hay or corn cut for sailage.

Shelled corn is always sold and talked about by bushel here in Iowa.

For you midwest guys 5 ton to the acre equals about 180 bushel to the acre. That is good corn,Bob. That is also a good average price.

When you call to price corn do they bid you by the ton in NY?

First time I have ever heard of this type of pricing.

Yes, by the ton. I guess in western NY there may be some by the bushel, but I'm right in the middle of the state- Fingerlakes region. Cayuga county to be exact- the largest grain producing county in the state.
Wheat is by the bushel.
May be something about this being dairy country and corn was just feed. Now with everyone watching the futures, the price is based on the bushel, but translated to tons out of habit, I think.
