Trailer Braking

Inertia is best. The harder you brake the harder the trailer brakes.

Timed is just that, after a certain delay the trailer brakes come on. If you just lightly touch the brakes to slow down then after XXX seconds the trailer brakes come on full force.

Get yourself a Tekonsha Prodigy or Prodigy P3 controller. They're the best inertia-based controllers on the market today, IMHO.

I've had my original Prodigy since 2004. It's all electronic accelerometer based, and is so quick on the uptake it almost feels like the trailer is braking WITH you instead of after. Never too much or too little. Easy to set, and set and forget.

The P3 is a newer version with a current readout and a couple extra settings, but they still make the original.

There are other controllers that plumb into the hydraulic lines, or attach to the brake pedal via a cable. They work a little better than the Prodigy, but the Prodigy is plenty "good enough" for most applications. It's so much better than the cheap controllers, you will wonder how you could improve things at all...

Inertial braking is a real PITA if you have to back up and it is going up hill... The trailer is fighting you the whole way... As if backing up hill wasn't bad enough... But for strictly pulling and level ground (for backing), inertial is the best...

I'll second this. I've got one in my truck and it works great. My
father in law has a timed unit in his, always fighting it, smoking the
trailer tires when lightly braking, tearing up my yard when they
visit.

Hands down the P3 !!! I go between electric magnet and electric over hydraulic a setting for each type and it is the best I have used!

ou must have something wired wrong, the controller should not operate unless you have your brake pedal down some. Even then the Tekonsha prodigy will not apply more braking thna normal.
