Mine is ok but the tires are getting bad they have a funny tread and are original. I know you could use a car tire but what do you guys do? can you get proper tires??

I put car tires on my JD 640. I found some small ones with mud and snow tread that have worked well. some will insist that you need bar tread or they will slide, but I had some extremely heavy hay this year with almost no slipping.

You can put car tires on a rake-most of us do.Just make sure they are the 'same'size. And if they slip,Just slap on a set of tire chains.Steve

It depends on the ground you farm, if it's flat you can usually get by with a car tire, if it's hilly or rolling you will need a more aggressive biting tire to keep from sliding possibly. Just my opinion.

The NH 55 has had car/truck tires on it since dad got it 40 years ago, only time it slips is when the hay is too wet to be out there in the first place.

Jocco, we put car snow tires on many JD, Nh, IHC, Ac rakes. They work fine, just make sure they come close to matching the height of the old ones.

I went to the tire store last year and put Goodyear implement traction tires 5.90 - 15 SL on mine the cost for both tires mounted was $96.38 usd.

Regular or more aggresive car tires will probobaly work ok if you are using a single rake setup. We have a tandem hitch setup, and pull two 256 rakes. I know that we sometimes have plugged the second (read) rake up because it cant get enough traction to turn the basket. This only happens in real heavy hay, but we do have it plug up probobaly twice to four times a year. Thinking of putting dual tires on the back rake.....That is a kit you can get from new holland. Good luck

Got to thinking about it, and grandpa used to have a dearborn or ferguson rake (cant remember which) but that rake had absolute slick tires on it. NO TREAD whatsoever......and i never remember it to plug up.....but....that damned rake probobaly weighed what 2 or 3 NH 256's did.....was a heavy son of a gun!!!!
