John Deere 950

I have a 1980 JD950, 4WD, Yanmar 28HP Diesel. Each time I go from forward to reverse, or vise versa, the rear end makes a noise. It is not real loud or anything, but it is consistant with direction changing. It sounds like mechanical slack or perhaps like a loose bearing? It only lasts for a second or two. I"ve only had it a few months, is this a normal thing with this tractor?

Thats actually kind of funny, and not. Had that knock on the Allis B and ignored it. Got a call one evening that it walked out of one of its rims and tires, and sure enough, it did. Should have made sure it was tight.

950 making a knocking noise going from forward to reverse and vica versa? I haven't heard mine do that. I'm certain that the hydraulic fluid in Lou's 950 is up to snuff. That is the lube for the trans and rear end. Could be the small enclosed rear brakes that are on either side of the rearend housing. Guess it could be a bearing. Hard to say without hearing it. Wheel centers loose on the axles comes to mind, probably not the rims on the centers though...they have six bolts and that would be really loose with either kind of center or rim. Mine is at home in a barn, as is my tech manual. I'm out of state. I've never heard mine make that noise Lou describes, so I know that it doesn't have to. I split mine between the trans and the engine, didn't need to go into the rearend, and the manual is at home, so I can't see whats inside back there, and can't envision his problem per say. Shifter forks are in the trans down at the foot boards. Gears on the shafts are down with the shifter forks in the trans, so thats not it. Live PTO maybe? Splitter for high/low range? I don't remember if thats a ring and pinion back there, and again, no manual where I'm at. I'll be home Saturday night, can look it up then if Lou can narrow it down as to where from exactly.

Hmm?
