10% ethanol????

I have to pay local national prices for fuel for everything other than the daily drivers (with US license plates). Option is super unleaded and super E10 unleaded (10% ethanol). All the experts on the payroll say it's compatable for most all vehicles.
Do you think things like saws, weedeaters, mowers, and the quad would do OK on it or is it asking for trouble? Almost 60 cents a gallon cheaper but don't wanna have to spend that 60 cents on repairs...

My view on Ethanol is OK to use if you use it quickly and do not
let is set in the tanks. I avoid it so that is not an issue in my
equipment.

The only problem running 10% ethanol is it doesn't store well for long periods of time. If you treat the gas with Stabile or Seafoam it will store for a winter without any issues. As least that's my personal experiance. Local Gas station has carried since the early 1980s.

I've used in everything from chainsaws and weed eaters to my newish Fords and Kias to my 1956 IH 350 tractor and 1968 F600.

Best thing you could do is start replacing fuel filters about a week or two after you start using it, it tends to clean up old gunked up fuel systems.

Do not let it set in weed eaters, chain saws, etc... It has a tendency to shorten the life of the fuel pick-up tubes and fuel lines... I just replaced fuel lines in two weed eaters and a chainsaw because of it... On the plus side, the new fuel lines are ethanol resistant, so no more worries...

The machines run on it ok, you"ll run into 2 problems:

1. It will remove old gunk & varnish from the fuel system & plug up small filters until the fuel system cleans out. Depends how old & gunky your machine(s) is.

2. It doesn"t store quite as well for engines used infrequently.

Surprisingly here in central NY we were some of the last to get ethanol, about 2 years ago.
We get it delivered in bulk to the farm and use it in everything, without issue.
We just tried our first biodiesel this summer with similar results.

davwe2, I have been running it in almost everything since 1976. The only thing I had trouble with was a 1966 Wheel horse lawnmower. I do not run it in my Chainsaw.

I also have been using it. Since 1974.

I had to replace 2 fuel filters in my 73 Torino in
the first 3 months I used it and haven't had a
problem with it since.

Once you get your system cleaned out there will be
no problems.Sometimes mine even sets for 6 months
without additives and it's still fine.

I don't use it my saws unless I'm gonna burn it
all out in a day or so.

Been useing it in everything ,both 2 and 4 stroke for years with NO ill effects.

I've run it in everything. Only problems were, I had two different non-fuel injected Chevy pickups that if I ran E-10 in the summer, and let them set for 15 minutes after running, I could guarantee they would vapor lock.

On the other hand, I once had a Fiat roadster with a high compression engine that required premium fuel. I found out it would run just as good on E-10 as on premium.

We've had problems with 10% here in Va. The
humidity runs high here just about year round and
that's part of the problem. Next problem here is
most E 10% is added at the tank farms as it's
being loaded in the tanker to be delivered to
stores. It will separate in about 12 days and
looks cloudy. Almost milky.
I think it's gotten better and we may be getting
fuel that has E 10% blended at the refinery now.
It got so bad here that some places were offering
ethanol free gas and some still do.

I dumped close to 10 gallons of the cloudy stuff
last year cause every time I put it in a 2 stroke
engine it wouldn't start. Go buy more gas and they
run good till it turns cloudy.

I think that cloudyness is the ethanol pulling the water out of the bottom of the old tanks.

Once the water disappears from those old tanks I bet everything will be fine.

Here all ethanol is mixed and loaded at the pipeline into the tanker trucks as well. There is no cloudy fuel but they have been blending it out for 37 years here. The tanks are cleaned after all these years.

Ethanol pulls very little moisture out of the air. Only time it can is when the container is open to the air.

We're humid here in Iowa as well and no cloudy fuel exists.

I haven't really had any problems except for fuel milage. Every time that I checked ethanol, I get 2mpg less than regular. When I can buy ethanol free it's worth it to me to pay a few cents more.

If the alcohol is separating from the gasoline it is because there is too much water in it. About 3 Tablespoons of water per gallon of gasohol will cause separation.

I just started a car that had been setting since 2003 with 3/4 tank of ethanol fuel. With a fresh battery it started up with no problems. I have had no problems with the fuel getting old in vehicles that have sealed fuel systems. On my Super C just a few months and it wont start.

In the 80s, methanol (gasohol), was an issue since it cleaned out the built-up gunk in fuel tanks and clogged filters. OMG, we"ve been running 10% ethanol in MN for three decades- the rest of the Country needs to wake up! Wanna keep funding the overseas terrorists, or stay domestic on fuel needs? Methanol and ethanol are not the same product!! It"s a constant battle to educate people about it.

You realize that the 1955 Studebacker was advertised to burn straight alchol. The biggist problems with it now is the fuel pump and the emission control system. If we were to return to carboraters, engines could burn 50% alcohol, with only a few adjustments, such as boring the jets, and changing the spark plugs.

I agree get over it! It is just like lead in the gas, remember we just had to have it. I live in southern Illinois and you can't buy any gas without alcohol in it. Same thing with bio-diesel, that is all the fuel man hauls. B11. Vic

Thanks folks.... Maybe I better stick to normal gas. Don't use my stuff enough to keep fuel from getting old...

Figured you might want to see this.

I use and like the E30 blend. I can't see a drop off in mileage. In fact
after running 3 tanks of the stuff my mileage actually went up. I
was told by a fuel distributor that it takes that long for the vehicle
computer to adjust to the difference in the fuel. I like the .20 plus
difference also.
