Have a Case D, 4 cyl gas, has a misfire, but if I pull a plug wire out of the distributor, any wire and hold it 1/2 in. away it runs smooth as long as it is arking. If I push the plug wire back into the distributor it misfires again. need some help, Thanks

he added gap you provide allows the coil voltage to rise higher before an arc occurs & that is enough extra voltage to fire a less than perfect plug. New set of plugs will fix your problem.

Someone on here said something about autolite plugs once and how they were miracle workers. Put them in my kia and it has a lot more pep and seems to get a little better mileage (been in almost 2 years) . Have since put the cross reference in the quad and a couple scooters that I had that weren't starting real easy. Quad bumps off like a new one every time when it'd barely start with ngk, bosch, and champion....
Found them to be cheaper too....

Just FYI

You might have a plug wire in the wrong hole in the distributor, Iv seen that happen.
JR FRYE:::: GOOD LUCK

pull wire increas gap spark has to jump, causes voltage increase in coil output. So... i would be looking at dirty cap contacts, rotor leak to shaft, or wires going bad.

Taking a plug wire off a plug and jump spark to the plug was a way to check for a bad plug at least 70 years ago and probly longer. It will cause a bad plug to fire. A lot of simple checks like that have been lost over the years. Like switching two plug wires to pop a slug out of a carburetor jet.

Sticking out my neck on this one.. You do have good answers here.

I don't know how the plugs set in the "D" but if recessed in the head may have a bad boot on wire arcing to the head ?

Maybe rust has built up on the porcelain will also ground out a plug.
