And we thought tractor parts were expensive....

Took my GMC truck to the local dealer to have a problem with the A/C corrected (for next year).
This dealer also sells and services one of the Japanese makes. The Service Manaher came out to the lounge and told the owner of the Japanese vehicle he needed a new muffler assy. (included tail pipe with chrome tip) and the price was $700. The guy about fell over. The excuse was the chrome tip on the tailpipe.

We see complaints here about parts pricing from various OEM's but nothing like this. It is worse elsewhere.

Buying some foreign cars reminds me of getting a printer-- cheap-- then look out when you need ink cartriages. The guy you refer to should take his foreign car to an independent shop and ask him to fit it with a "generic" exhaust system (might need a tube bender to make custom parts).

The guy with the foreign car told the Service Manager he would do some "checking" am sure he was thinking of the same thing you suggested, take it to an exhaust system shop and have one made for his vehicle.

I was setting in a honda dealership the other day waiting for my wifes car to get serviced.
(we had a free oil change cupon). The service manager told an elderly woman waiting for her car that they tested her battery and it should be replaced because winter is coming on.He told her it would cost 150 bucks.
She brought the car in for wiper blades. She told him to change the battery if he thought it was best

Marilyn set up an appointment for tomorrow morning at the Toyota dealer for a 60,000 mile 'recommended' trans oil change for our 08 Sienna van. I'm going along with her just in case they try to talk her into, or out of something the van doesn't need. There are things I need to do here at home, including a little event we call bean harvest but for some reason I don't have a good feeling about the dealer. We'll find out tomorrow. Jim

Replaced my system from front to back on six cylinder 30th anniversary Ford.. $220.
$ was on par.
Read some of the Auto Mags and list of prices for replacement parts.. makes the eyes water.
The Generics probably come from the same factory without the Car Company endorsement.

That is some expensive chrome! Import or Domestic, OEM replacement parts are outrageously expensive! And exhaust systems are some of the worst. Now, I know that some parts are made by the same companies to different specs. ie. Ford, NAPA Advance, etc. (or so it is said,) but I don't see that much difference unless you are going to keep the vehicle until you are both old and gray.

Well i deal in both farm and auto parts. We are a New Holland and a GM dealer ship. I would have to say GM parts are the biggest surprise. Yes lots of ag parts will blow you away.

Now the battery trick. The auto service bought a new battery charger from GM to give the tech the best result on the battery condition. Seems 8 out of 10 batteries fail the test. Biggest failure is cold cranking amps. I have voiced my opinion several times that doesn't mean the battery is bad. I do a hydromentor test and find most times the battery charge is low. I put it on trickle charge over night, wait and retest it and 95% of them retest good. I like the top post batteries the best since I have lots of tractors.

Lot of elderly people don't drive their vehicles that much and the charge is low from setting because all the computer stuff drawing from the battery while sitting, A 10 minute quick charge is not enough time to bring the battery back to full production.

Got a BIL who isn't the brightest guy......he paid 1700 dollars to get the cats change on a 96 or 97 Surburban at the Chevy dealer. Called my SIL who works for a different Chevy dealer and ask the price for the part....700 dollars so the stealer here charge 1K for labor?????

Many (all?) of the new GM exhausts are stainless and while expensive, last a long time. One of the vette's uses a titanium exhaust.

Recently replaced the two tiny springs that hold the brushes in place on a honda ob tilt and trim electric hydraulic unit. They are about the size of the springs in a pen, and not as good a quality! $14!

I am the parts manager at a new Ford Store, some
the the price's of the parts I sell makes me
sick. Our inside joke is that since Ford didn't
take any bail out money, because they priced
their replacement parts to cover the difference..

I ride a Harley Sportster. The bolt that holds the highway peg on the left side broke while I was riding. There is a little "indexing spacer plate" between the peg mount and frame. The plate is about 1 inch by 1 inch by 3/16ths thick with three indexing holes and one mounting bolt hole. The mount was $129. The pegs was $79. The spacer plate was $5. I asked "Are you sure this plate is genuine Harley? I"ve bought anything genuine that cheap before.

A neighbor lady, recently widowed, had a broken
tie rod end on a John Deere riding mower. She
"Didn"t want to bother" me so called a JD
dealer. They picked it up, and brought it back
for $35 each way,(10 miles 1 way) Then charged
$250 for a tie rod end, and labor. They also said
she needed a new battery, for $100, but she asked
me about that. I"ll get her a battery for about
$35, but it won"t have a deer picture on it!

sil drives a several year old jaguar.back electric window got to working flaky on her and she took it to a dealer, switch was over $400!for a simple rocker switch you could buy anywhere for 5 bucks.

"It has always been thus."

Production Credit bought a fleet of Fords in 1977 (remember the LTD II? Great cars). I was the first to hit 5000 miles (or whatever) for an oil change. Took it in, and boss called me in a few days later. "What all did you have them do on your car?" "Oil change and a new headlight." Bill was $112, and boss was not happy. By the time the next one needed service, he had made arrangements with an independent shop, and we never darkened the Ford dealer's doorway again.

I was working on my Ford trucks door lock motor,Its held in place with a 1/4in pop rivet.I had a jammed lock cylinder.Ford wanted 49 bucks for a new lock. One locksmith said replace it ,a second lock smith fixed it for 5 bucks.Ford wanted 2.90 for the pop rivet.I had to make a trip of about 30 miles.Stopped in an auto supply and bought 2 for 79 cents.Stopped at a body shop where I got one free.Stopped at a small shop where I got 2 for 25 cents.I have the tool to pull these big rivets.Just dont use them often. On the other hand When I needed spring hangers for my truck I had to get them at a Ford dealer.Rock Auto sent the wrong front hangers wouldnt take them back.I parked the truck and didnt get the box off until a month later. They pulled the no returns after 30 days on me.The rear hangers were the right ones for for a 4wd but the fronts were for a 2wd.Three auto shops tried to give me the wrong parts.I called the Ford parts man.He said I know what you need and will leave them on the counter with the slip if Im not here when you come for them. The parts cost more but were the right ones. The ford hangers were heavier than the import parts. The 4wd uses a 3 inch wide spring, 2wd uses a 2.5 inch spring.
