Hose connected to muffler ???

We sometimes see a tractor or crawler that have an hose connected to the top pipe of a vertical muffler
what is the purpose of that setup ?

There's a venturi in the exhaust pipe or muffler that creates a suction used to pull dust/dirt out of the air precleaner. The hose connects the two.

The venturi device is commonly called an "aspirator".

air preheat where it sucks warm air from around the muffler. used in a lot of very cold climates for snow removal and other winter work..

Bob is right, called a scavenger system to suck some of the dirt out of the air intake system.

Many of those type air pre-cleaners with the hose from muffler extension pipe were seen in West Texas where it is noted for it's sandy soil. They do help keep air cleaner cleaner.
