mounting temporary headlights on a 1944 John Deere B

I'm looking to mount some temporary headlights on my 1944 John Deere B.It's a hand start therefore does not have generator or battery. My Uncle said I could run the wiring with a inline fuse directly to the magneto, mine has a post on the side of the magneto that it could be connected too.I was just wanting too make sure this would not harm the magneto?Remind ya I'm not going to be running the lights for long periods of time (1-2 hours top)and it would be disconnected when not in use. Thanks for any input.

Strap a battery on it somewhere and wire a couple of cheap headlights to it.
Lights would probably work for several hours before you needed to recharge the battery.

Check mounting holes toward front of frame where cultivator would bolt on- on right side mount a box adout 10x14by 4 deep inchs or larger- this is for a battery. Get some angle iron 3x3x1/8 and bolt to frame going up a little or out a few inchs- mount a set of cheap running lights - Harbor Freight or auto store $14.95 to $29.95-or a couple tractor work lights -$7.95 to $19.95 using the old 4001 sealed beam or even the 6014. Mount a toggle switch back by steering column- duct tape or hose clamp on tab mount- and run wires from battery to switch to lights. Charge battery before use, run couple hours should be good enough. When done with whatever night use, can unbolt light brackets, remove battery and call the battery box tray a wrench and grease gun holder. This assumes you"re not planning some cultivating at night. Magneto won't charge a battery. You'll have to mount an alternator and belt it to the engine somewhere. Donnoif you could fit a pulley on the shaft that drives the fan.

They sell solar battery charger/maintainer for pretty cheap (<$15) that could charge the battery during the day (you will have to leave it in the sun)... That should be sufficient charge to run for a couple of hours each night... (provided you don't run the lights during the day, duh!)

On my Case "L" my uncle before me mounted a generator in line with the belt pulley. Ran a v-belt around the pulley. Set a battery on the foot rest. mount the lights some how. Do the wiring and away we go. Would only charge when tractor was moving but that;s enough.

The stud on your mag won't run lights, it's there to ground the mag to stop the engine. If you want to run a generator or alternator JD made a split pulley that will attach to your fanshaft. Can't remember the part number, but you could look it up. If you don't want to run a generator and don't use the lights very often you could probably put a battery in the frame rails and hold it in place with a bungee. I mount an additional light on my 48 JD D with a magnet. Then you can move it and line it up where you want. That might work for you too.

look at a place like autozone or jc whitney and get a pair of the LED driving lights (about 40 bucks??) and use them with existing electric. Only work while tractor is running tho..... Or, put you a battery somewhere and charge it as needed.

Why are you running a wire to the mag for lites that wont work the mag make electricity for fire to the spark plugs but sure wont make a lite work.

What made headlights work on the older motorcycles that didn't have batteries? Lights would only work when bike was running....

If you already have a deep cycle battery it could be a good power source for your temporary lights.

To estimate how long the battery will last between re-charges:
take the amp-hour rating of the battery and divide that by the amperage drawn of your lights to find the maximum number of hours you can run your lights between re-charges.

Ex: 80 Amp-hour battery divided by 20 Amps = 4 hours maximum. The lights will get very dim towards the end.

Good luck.
