Oil bath air filter

I was wondering what everybody used to replace the element in their oil bath air cleaner. I found some on line for 12.50 a roll and it would take three rolls in mine. I just can"t justify 37.50 for an air filter.

ell, how much can you justify for a new engine? Paper elements for my Ferguson run $88

cheaper than a rebuild.. try filters for 5 ton military trucks converted to fire department use, we change paper filters on our one tons every use. have you cleaned the old wire mesh in a bucket of solvent? then apply whatever motor oil to the mesh and place back in the canister by wrapping it over a tube of caulk and shoving it back in. it is designed to be reused.

I would keep the oil bath air filter. Clean the wire mesh and clean oil cup and fill to line with motor oil. The motor oil you use in the oil cup can be a cheap oil. After a good cleaning I clean oil cup 1 or 2 times a year and depends how much I use it. I like oil bath over dry type. They are cheaper to maintain. My GMC pickup dry type air filter cost $30.00 for cheap to $60.00+ for a good one every time its replaced.

What are you asking exactly? Oil bath on the dozen or so machines I have do not use any paper or element, they have a downdraft into a pool of oil, and then steel wool type of stuff to collect the oil back out. Nothing to really filter, other than the dust hitting the oil pool.

How/ why are you combining an oil bath and an element filter type?

clarify--the mesh filter is cheap compared to paper filters and can be used again and again. typed before my brain kicked in.

Sorry. I have a 1959 Case tractor that I removed the steel wool element and shook it and metal fibers fell all over the place. Obviously the old filter element is not going back it there so I was looking for an alternative. There is no paper filter there at all.

the mesh for an 8N is 8.78 a roll on this site---should be the same stuff. I think I used 2 rolls for my 2N. don't know how much you need---but it does last awhile if serviced regularly once you buy it.

Sorry, I missed your follow-up post. How about stuffing it full of stainless steel pot scrubbers from your local supermarket?

In my case the stuff didn"t last forever. It"s coming apart and I don"t want the steel fibers in the engine. It will have to be replaced with a new element or a substitute.

I believe the pot scrubber pads have detergent in them. I will look and see if there are any available detergent free. This is kind of the idea I was looking for.

I have a lot of trouble with the search engine here at YT Parts. It's so vehicle specific, I have trouble searching for a different tractor with the same parts as mine. I've never see the filter element listed here. I'll try again.

look at the real course ones and not the brillo pads. Look on ebay.

They will shed small pieces.Use the right stuff.Stainless is brittle.I find bits in the sink strainer. The mesh just stops big rocks, oil bath is still the best air cleaner.Your tractor must be worth more than 37.50.
