Not only that old ones prior to the M48/M60 series tank that had much heavier track systems and a much stouter track tool.


Common name is track jack.

Too small for that in my opinion... Besides... from the angle of the 'jaws' it looks like they're used to pull things 'apart'... :)

Somebody quick get Dave2 in here. He can post that there is obviously one spreader and one tightener...... then we can get on with going down the path blaming external_link or Bush for why we need tank treads.
 
They are obviously pullers of some sort, but I bet you'd be bangin knuckles, tightening a heavy chin, the way those cranks are set up.

One that will work on the M48/M60 and the M1 series tank.

Correct way to use em to back off the tension all the way, then they are really only pulling on a few track blocks at a time. You can see by the photo that even modern ones are not very large.
