I changed the engine oil screwed on a new cartridge , then had an occasion to remove cartridge , now the cartridge leaks engine oil ,thinking about putting a bit of silicone between the rubberised seal and the machined surface on the block, it may remain pliable long enough to allow it to seal before it becomes a sticky mess any other ideas that might help , Thanks
Ken.

if the gasket is leaking on the filter, silly cone aint gonna fix it...a new filter aint that expensive.

Silicone inside a motor will/might get into the oil pump and end up on a rod/main bearing and thats the end of your motor, but a new filter!

You can buy a new gasket from NAPA Auto Parts,
they"re in their Master Catalog, though you may
have to purchase a pak of 10.

If and when you replace that filter, always dip yer finger in a bit of oil and coat the new sealing surface and the rubber gasket. Be careful not to over tighten. only a little past snug, and back it up a quarter inch or less turn. That way the gasket will seat itself without a wrinkle or separate from the can itself.

Next time you remove it and you need a wrench it was too tight.

Oil pressure (10 to 50 psi) will likely blow-out silicon caulk on cold startups.

If the seal on the old filter is still good you could try to re-use that one. It may not come off in one piece though.
