disk plow horsepower

at the auction today there was an old MH disc plow...heavy duty old thing...3 bottom
what type of hp does it take to use a plow like this? how deep do you work? is it a good type of plow for heavy clay? don't see many in our area
my dad was with me and was intrigued by it...remembers his dad being the 2nd bidder on one years ago and has always been curious about how well they work.

I have one, that I pull with a D-14 Allis, 33 HP. It is 3 bottom, cutting width, about 27-30 inches. I think they roll a little easier, than a moldboard setup, of similar size.

Was it a disk plow or a oneway plow. A one way has all disk on a comon axle, a disk plow each disk is on its own mounting. A disk plow will work about anywhere a molboard will work puss places a molboard won't work as in rocky conditions. We used disk plows here because we have wall to wall flint rock plus a lot on limestone out cropping.

I just relized I didn't answer your question. We pulled a 3 disk with an H later an M. H pulled it in 3rd and 2nd some times 1st. M pulled it in 3rd.
Super A we pulled a 2 disk in 2nd, later 230 2 disk 2nd.
These were all simi mounted plows IHC HM150 and A151
The later ones 330U 3 disk fast hitch 230 fast hitch 2 disk.

Ive been told that disc p;ows just dont work well in heavy soils just makes sense they wont go in the ground very well and turn soil over thats why they werent used here in the corn belt.

They were called New Land plows, for a reason, they were used to break newly cleared land. They could cut through a 3" root, yet roll over a newly discovered rock. I have a field full of rocks, that range in size from 2" igneous, to 3' sandstone, I think they call it glacial till, the disc plow is the only plow that is able to work it!

I have a 2 disk with 40JD. When new & in good condition you could put it in the ground anywhere, more so than moleboard. Especially good where roots are common. Probably don't turn the ground quite as good as moleboard, especially turfy ground.

i pull a 2 bottom with my 2n.they should work pretty good in hard clay i would think.im in mostly sandy loam and it works very well there.have used it in old hard cleachy clay and it worked when a moldboard wouldnt even go in the ground.mounted ones are pretty heavy though, you have to have your lift in good shape.

If then scrapers are adjusted right it will do just as good as a molboard. That is the purpose of the scrapers.
