Case Model C Ignition Timing

Posted this on the Case forum a few days back but didn't get any response so here I am; have rolled the engine to #1 TDC compression, mark on flywheel is visible through plug hole in bell housing, turned mag until it snaps at #1. This is a Case mag I believe and has a pointer indicating which tower is being fired. Then bolted mag in place and towed. It will fire, late I think as we can get flame out the exhaust when I tweak the run/start lever on the back of the mag.I narrowed the points up a bit but this did not change anything. Went through the above steps several times, including hand cranking and watching the valves/spark relationship which appears close. Finally called it a day shortly after mid night and drove home (an hours drive) so don't feel to brilliant today. Any help with this issue (the tractor, not me!) would be appreciated, Bob

The flywheel goes around twice for each revolution of the mag, are you sure the mag is not 180 degrees off? If you're 180 off you are firing at the top of the exhaust stroke, a good way to get flame out the stack. VW bug distributors go in right or 180 off, don't ask how I know this

It sounds like you are timing it 180 degrees out. Take a spark plug out and make sure you are timing it on top dead center on the COMPRESSION stroke. You may have it timed top dead center on the EXHAUST stroke.

Also you want the mag to snap at top dead center. If you are snapping it then putting it in you are already out of time. Does this mag have a drive gear or drive tangs??? If it has a drive gear you may be just a few degrees late.
