working on '83 chevy 350, replacing head gaskets, i know how to adjust the valves once running but i need to know the procedure for initial set up for them, in other words how do i set the pushrods and rockers for initial start up?

You do NOT need to adjust them running. Use the two-position method to set half of them @ #1 TDC, then rotate crankshaft 1 turn and set the other half. While twirling each pushrod with your finger, tighten up the lash and you will feel the zero lash position, the go 3/4 to one turn more. (Personal choice.)

@ #1 TDC, set Intake valves 1,2,5,7 & exhaust valves 1,3,4,8.

Then, rotate engine 360º (one crankshaft turn) and adjust:

Intake valves 3,4,6,8 and exhaust
valves 2,5,6,7.

Done!! (IF I typed all the numbers right!)

What I remember is I would take the slack out - would still be able to turn (spin) the pushrod with 2 fingers. Some will be on the cam lobe, so you need to turn the engine for them.

Hopefully others will correct or agree with me...or have a better method

Bob is right, you don't have to adjust em while running....but you can. Tighten em down by the method Bob stated then start it up. Order don't matter when it's running....loosen up one at a time till it's making noise, tighten until no noise and then one turn and repeat on each one.

"but you can"

(IF you like spraying hot oil and SMOKE, that is!)

Once a guy gets the fell for using the two-position method, it's a "no-brainer".

thanks guys, this is what i needed, its been 25 years since i was into a sb chevy and i couldnt remember the procedure, i bought a "overhaul manuel" which like most of them is missing some of the key info that i bought the manuel for lol

Bob thats very true. I use to have a set of valve covers with a slot cut along the top to keep the mess at a minumum.
