Dad's Tractors

My Father farmed 120 arces in the 1950's thru the early 1970's with 2 tractors, a 1948 Ford 8N and a 1949 John Deere B.
He had a 2 bottom plow with each, but would use the Ford 8N exclusively for plowing. I heard that the Ford was made to plow one acre per hour. Would the John Deere B have done as much and which one would have used the least amount of fuel. The first photo is my Aunt on the new 8N with 2 bottom plow. She was 17 at the time.
The second photo is my Dad on his B that I restored.

The John Deere B would certainly do OK with a 2 bottom plow. Don't know about the fuel useage.

That 2nd photo is a classic, great memories there especially for your Dad. What approximate years were the 2 photos taken? What state is this?

Great job of restoring . It probably made your Dad smile with joy plus brought back memories . How about the 8n ? Did you restore it also > Your Aunt was a pretty lady back then . Seeing a woman in a dress is a thing of the past now days . God bless

I believe the first picture was taken about 1950 and the second around 2003. My Dad had his farm 30 miles northeast of the Twin Cities in Minnesota, close to the St. Croix River.
The farm was in his family since the 1850's and he was born on it. My brother lives there now. It was classified as a Century Farm back in the 1980's.

I imagine that the JD clutch handle got him on the knee once and that was enough of that...!!!
Hard to tell about the fuel usage..I know that the JD "B" could go thru over 2 1/2 tanks of gas in a good day, working hard..but were about as easy on gas as anything, back then...
I would think the JD would get more done per hour..
Maybe he like to plow around the field, making square corners as he went..the Ford could do that easier than the JD with a pull-type plow..
Very NICE job on that "B"..!!!

Great pictures. The thing that I see is the wind mill in the background. I'd like to get one of them. I live in central New York if you know of one near here.

Can't imagine why anyone would plow with an 8N and leave a late JD B in the barn, but to each his own. Got to make you fell good that you got his B restored so he could see it.

That 8N would plow rings around that JD "B'. While you where stuck in the touch spots that Ford 8N would be going right along. Now I don't like 8Ns for much but any tractor with a working draft control is much better to plow with than a non draft control tractor. Plus pull type plows are a head ache to plow smaller field with too.

Now for disking the JD B would be much better because of the larger rear wheels. It would ride better and have more traction with a disk.

I have plowed with both of those tractors. I have pulled a 3 bottom plow with my B in good going and I'm sure an 8N won't do that. A 2 bottom behind the B I was just playing around and could go up to 5th gear and still go !
