Magneto Problem: Setting Points

Got a mag on a 6HP Lauson engine. Don't know what kind it is, tag too far gone. Says 'WICO' on the condenser, but anybody could have put anything in there over the last 50 years. Mag operates from a cam on the engine, and through a system of linkage, pulls a little clevis on the bottom of the mag. Clevis attached to the bottom of a U-shaped coil core, and in operation pulls the bottom of the "U" away from the rest of the magnetized assembly about a half an inch. Breaker points mounted in a little tube, parallel with the travel of the core. Shortly after the core halves begin to separate, the points are pulled open. Question: Whatever the gap is supposed to be, how far should the core halves be separated to set the gap? Thanks, Fritz

Google Wico EK & you should find what you need. I think the points open about .040 to .060 after the other part breaks. It helps to get the magnet charged too.
