O/T Hughesnet Satellite Internet.......

My wireless Internet service fell apart. It comes and goes, and when it's working the speed is about like dialup. They've checked out my computer system, and that's all good. I think the wireless company has big time equipment issues, but all they do is blame the poor and unacceptable service onto factors that existed already when the service was still working fine.

DSL is not an option, 'cause I live in a mile wide dead zone between two DSL transmitters.

Kinda out of desperation, because my livelyhood depends on being online with the faster the service the better, I signed up with Hughes satellite service. They'll install it next Wednesday.

I'd appreciate hearing any comments from anyone who has Hughes, good, bad, and ugly. I'd expect it to lose signal during a bad thunderstorm occasionaly, but my wife says we shouldn't be online during a thunderstorm anyway. Cost of the service actually comes out slightly less than my current wireless.

Thanks in advance.

had them--moved to an area that has decent wireless service that was half the price.. when I had them never had many issues, and was fairly fast.

'bout like dial-up. Is way slower than they tell you it will be. We changed to at&t wifi or rather mifi. Much faster, no dish, and $30 bucks a month cheaper.

Watch for the download limit, once you hit it they throttle the connection to slower than dialup for 24 hours.

Don't know anything about it except pretty girl on commercial.

I did find this

I would imagine its like Direct TV when weather is bad, or keep snow off the dish.
Its amazing how addictive this box has become for me when its not working can't find bills (We pay most online) E-mails,reading news( eliminated daily paper)shopping, banking Etc....good luck

We had to get satellite internet for the same reasons. Was always dissatisified with it for the price, but it was a tad better than dial-up. I kept ordering DSL from the phone co. If you order it like every month, even though you know you can't get it, it goes into the petition. When enough requests for it is received, you will get it. I always reminded all the neighbors to call and ask for it, whether they wanted it or not. Finally we got it into our little neck of the woods. It was a joyous day when I was able to cancel the satellite internet service.

Better get online and read the reviews of it. Some good, some bad. I was looking into it for my motorhome if I ever get to retire, and think I would stay away from it and find something better.

When you say DSL are you talking about rural wireless internet that consists of a sender/receiver unit on a tower that broadcasts a signal, and a radio on your house that picks it up, or some sort of hardwired solution using telephone wires?

I've had Hughesnet for 2 yrs coming this Nov. When my contract is up I'm history. Download too much(Grand kids helping) and it gets to move at a Snails pace. Cheapest rate is about $80 per month. In my golden/olden years I can't stand to talk/listen,understand a Foreigner that can't speak GOOD ENGLISH.

terrible service for me. during the evening dialup is faster. i get mine, now, thru verizon wireless. $60 a month but blazing fast. i could probably do the cheaper one but this is an old alltel unlimited plan, so i hate to give it up. i did have to install a cellphone extender to make it work really good in my house. when i travel i always take it and it's worked well for me for 3yrs. I just traded all my old hughesnet equip this week to our local installer. it's been sitting around. I paid $600 upfront for the service/equip and cancelled it less then a yr later; it was so bad.

I have wireless internet, speed about 1 meg, sometimes faster. In the beginning it was terrible, always dropping out, etc. Seems whenever it rained the signal couldn't make it thru the trees. The internet company transferred me to a different tower (farther away) & it's pretty solid now. My neighbor has Hughesnet and his service is very slow (& costly). I wish I could get DSL but am stuck with wireless. I would go with dial-up rather than satellite.

I had hughes net for three years and the only problem I had was I didn't buy enough time at higher speeds so it would revert to slow speed. Finally got enough time to cure the problem. Rather enjoyed it. Be sure to coat your dish so the snow doesn't stick. I used PAM from the kitchen and the snow slid right off.

DSL is through your home telephone land line. Its is an "always on" service. You can use your telephone and serf the net at the same time. You can have several computers online at the same time if need be. Its very fast and you don't have the tremendous "latency" that makes the satellite system so undesireable.

I'm on Hughesnet now. About 2X as fast as dial up and 3X as expensive. For 3X the cost I had hoped for better but so it goes. DSL is not available here where I am because we are still on a 1/2 mile of copper phone lines and DSL requires fiber optic. Wireless is useless here we are having issues right now even with cellphone signal strength. Thanks to Verizon.

DSL comes in on your copper phone line. No modifications necessary. If you are within 3 miles of their service box (where the fiber connection is) you can get DSL. Sometimes it takes asking and asking like we did. If you ask for it enough they finally put it to you. (I mean that in a good way, of course.)

My verizon service has been sucking bad lately too and we finally determined that their 4G servise is close enough that our aircard is trying to connect to it but can't.

Verizon figured out to rest my card to only lock onto the 3G signal and now its working great again. Maybe you are having the same issue.

The telephone barely works here at the end of the junk copper line. We have no wireless signal.
We have been with Hughes a year. We left Wildblue after a little over 3 years. I would like more service for the money, but you've heard how "beggars can't be choosers" !!!!

I"ve used it for several years, no other real options here. It is fairly fast compared to dial up. Don"t have any idea when it refreshes so if you have a major update to download you can"t really plan when to do it, somtimes it goes 30 hours and sometimes 15-20 before a refresh. You get unlimited download during certain hours of the night, Hard to set up most things to download then though..... especially with their program.

we had dail up for yrs my verizon wireless sales person told me try a aircard like used in lap tops if you get cell phone service air card works great 50 times faster then dail up

Yep, with an aircard, if you get decent cell phone service in the house, you can get a router that lets you plug the aircard into it. This allows you to connect your computers to the router, allowing several computers to use it at the same time. It can also act as a firewall giving you added protection. The plans I've seen though has a cap on how much download you can have per month and it ain't very much. That is the problem with the satellite services also. They cap you on usage. My DSL now has no cap. I can use all I want.
