Ok guys, if this was your car, what weight of oil would you run in it? I'll help you out a little.... I live in Iowa, the car has under 70,000 miles on it and it has a 390- 4 brl. Owners manual says 30wt summer, 10wt winter OR 10w30 multi. Let me know what you think. Not opposed to anything. I run 15w40 in my 8n ford tractor year round and 5w30 in my daily drivers.

It seems pretty obvious to me that you should probably run 10W30. I've used it in both my personal vehicles for years, and have never had a problem. The '01 Montana has 232,00 and the '03 Silverado has 90,000. The most important thing is to change it often enough. By the way, I'm in Iowa, too.
Good Luck and God Bless

The engineers at Ford designed the bearings to work with a certain hydrodynamic film thickness. That film thickness is what is achieved using the recommended oil. Using a higher viscosity will probably only result in increased fuel consumption due to the higher shearing force required with that oil. If the viscosity is too high, though, there is increased likelihood of vapor cavitation, which can result in premature bearing failure.

I'd run 10W30.

I also ran 10w30 in my '62 with 292 here in NW Iowa. Oh would I like to have that old buggy back again. 292, three on the tree, with overdrive. 29 and 30 mpg in a big old boat. Them was the days! Oh yeah, gas at $.35 a gallon.

multi weights were just starting to come out.. and were new...

now muti weights are far superior to single weights.

a 15w40 hd oil will do well, but do the cold climate you might consider going with a lower weight to help with cold starting. If it starts good, stay with the 15w-40..

By 1963 most people were using 10W30 in new or nearly new cars in nearly all parts of the US.

That said, be certain that whatever you use is compatible with flat tappets, e.g., 15W40.

Yep, miss mine too! It was my first car. I had the two-speed Ford-o-Matic & 3:00 gears in the rear. Great economy. Gas was under a dollar for the second last time. After they did away with regular, I kept it bottle-fed with lead for the rest of it's life. It had 56k on it when I first bought it & I put another 68k on it. No overhaul. I still have the engine. Meanest sounding thing since the flatty & never did me any wrong.

I've owned a couple of trucks with the 390 engine. I always used 10w-30. Both trucks went well past 100,000 miles with no real issues.

have 59 mercury's. ran 10w40 Phillips, had 71 f-100 p/u-390 cid, ran same, no problems in winter, summer with the 40w helped...now i run 15w40 for higher mileage and in everything else..the newer car/truck have different bearing clearances, using lighter oils e.i. 5w-30, different blocks/heads etc for new lower # oils
