wildfires in Tx

I believe this news clip says it all.

"Since the beginning of the wildfire season, Texas has dealt with over 20,900 fires that have destroyed more than 1,000 homes and burned 3.6 million acres, according to local and state officials."

And you still see unthinking people toss cigarettes out their car windows.

Nancy, I agree with you that a tossed cigarette can start a fire, but information from the Texas Forestry Division says the Number 1 cause is people burning stuff. Here is thier quote.

People and their activities cause more than 90 percent of all wildfires in the state. Careless debris burning (of household trash, brush and leaf piles, garden spots, etc.) results in the largest number of human-caused wildfires.

I don't disagree that the big fires are caused by people burning trash, etc. But I've seen dozens of small places burned along the highway and have seen several of 20+ acres that you could tell started along the highway.

Nancy,Guys, The Bastrop, Tx, fire is still O% containment as of this AM. They are just trying to save what homes that haven't burned yet! The fire is still ruffly 16 mi X 6 mi! Well over 400 homes there. There is no estimates to loss of Cattle, Horses, Sheep/Goats.
@ Bastrop is the Lost Pines State Park An area of pine trees that is separated from East Texas Where they are usually found. Seeing them explode like a bomb has been a new experience for most of the fire Fighters.
The count has just gone over 1000 homes here and accross the rest of Texas. The Noon News out of Austin just reported!!
So far here at My home we has not had any fires yet, or close adjacent areas! My 966 is standing by with a disk hooked up.

I am a volunteer FF. Some people have no clue and probably never will. more are started from carelessness or sparking brakes and catalytic convertors as well. Recently the biggest cause we have had is damage to highwires from wind causing sparks and welding without appropriate precautions. hope things get better down there, we've been busy fighting the fire in the wichita mountain reserve, helicopters bulldozers and the fellows from the forestry service have helped. no loss of homes so far, but was very intense fire.

We had a local idiot burn trash last month. Started the fire then went inside to watch tv. Burned two hundred acres, two barns and one empty house.

We had a guy that was burning trash, caught his own field on fire, the died of a heart attack trying to put it out. As far as smoking, if you are dumb enough to throw a burning but out the window, I think they ought to take your license.

We've been getting small fires down here alot. most of the true open land is either under gov. subsidies or owned by a developer and is unmaintained, except for a few scrawny cows. Its a disaster waiting to happen. Now Have any of you looked at the early pictures of Texas? You notice the absence of nearly all the tress( except near creeks, bayous and rivers) we have now. I'm thinking we are coming out of a unusually wet period and its going back to the way it used to be, dry, treeless and open. Just a scary thought. I've just bought over $5,000 of hay and am watching the fires extremely close.

There are a lot of non-thinkers when it comes to carelessness, be it a tossed cigarette or an ill thought out burn.

The facts from Texas Forestry are:

1. Careless burning 90%
2. careless welding
3. vehicle exhaust
4. cigarettes
5. arson

2,3,4,5, 10%

All that aside, God keep you safe and guide you whether you are fighting fires, protecting your property or trying to find a safe place. I stand in your place and petition God right now and pray that the shadow of His wings will find you, in Jesus name, Amen

My grandfather who was here in the early days, said grass was waist high. The trees grew because of overgrazing. Perticulary the Mosquite can't come up if the grass is thick.

I never burn brush unless it's raining. Don't smoke so that's out. I do weld sometimes, but not outside and keep water nearby.

I get the idea that TX and OK have lost more homes to wildfires this year that CA. As I posted earlier, we made a trip to San Francisco. I don't see what keeps the whole countryside there from burning up, this time of year the countryside is covered with a dead grass that looks like cheat grass and it's all along the shoulder of the roads.

I disagree as I've seen Mesquite sprouts pop up in tall grass. Mesquites thrive in dry weather because of their very long tap root.
