What do farmers and tractor collectors want.

I study what other business's do to see what works and what doesn't. The question that I have for you guys and gals is, what do you want that you can not get from a business today? This may be anything that has to do with farming to tractors. Don't hold back and tell me what you want. I'm all ears.

There is a huge difference in what a small farmer, large farmer and collectors want. Both the small farmers and large farmers want profit.

The large farmers want automation on the equipment so they can farm with less labor and more precision.

The small farmers want equipment that is reliable and can be worked on by themselves if possible. I would believe they prefer modern equipment if it is more economical.

The collectors want old equipment.

I want common courtesy, also like to see a business appreciate my interest in their product and by all means honor any warranty work that may arrise. My biggest pet peeve with some places is the lack of knowledge of their own parts, availability of parts, etc. Seems that a lot of people employed these days in a business do not have people skills anymore. And most importantly I want to talk to someone that speaks good english.

I am an extremely loyal customer to the suppliers who 'take care' of me. What that means to me is the product is right, at a price at or below the competition, on time or ahead of schedule from a place that knows my name and reputation. My farm supply/feed/fertilizer dealer and my New Holland dealer are like that. Consequently, I dont price shop around, I call them and order what I need.

As an example, I needed a tractor, quick, last year. I'd purchased a new discbine from this particular dealer and nothing I had would pull it as fast as I wanted to go without it getting hot. I told them what I wanted, TB 110 or 120, low hours, and a decent trade in on my least reliable tractor. They sent a guy the next day to look at mine, a 45 minute drive. Called me that night, we made a deal sight unseen on a low hour TB110 they had on the lot. I never even heard it run til it was in my driveway. The billed me at the end of the month on an open house account, just like it was an oil filter I had shipped to me. Bill got paid the day I got it. When I used to price shop they ran 3-10 percent below the other NH dealers, and when you call the owners are working the parts counter.

I still want products made in the USA, not this chinese crap that EVERY retailer is shoving down our throats, Take a real hard look at the merchandise that is being offered at all retailers and you will see made in China.

I want a dealer less than 40 miles away. Don't care which major brand,I'll switch if I have to. Decent service without the condacending attitude from a bunch of snot nosed minimum wage kids behind the parts counter when I get there would be nice too.

I want to be able to trust the ones I deal with to do the best they can, and just not cheat me.

I've gone to the same mechanic for everything, for probably 30 years. I trust him completely, and I don't require him to save the broken parts or call me if its going to be over $75, as the law requires (unless the customer waives it). He comes and rescues my wife and kids (or me) when needed, and doesn't "fix" anything that doesn't need fixing. But he also looks everything over when we bring a rig in, and fixes anything that needs fixing.

His 30-ish employee summed it up best, when I asked him how he liked working there: "He treats me like an adult, has never asked me to do anything unethical, and I want to work here for the rest of my life."

I sense that the big dealers are not concerned about the small operators. I do not know if it is there belief that it is not profitable, or if this comes from the manufacturer.

We have some pretty good tractor parts guys in my area that know the older tractors well, but they will retire some day. I hope they train the new guys.

I hate taking my truck into the dealer anymore. They have a bunch of really young service managers that really do not know automotives. It is like talking to the best buy sales kid.

Parts for equipment that they have sold. Local (25 miles) CaseIH dealer (Titan) has to order in parts for anything over about 10 years old. Common parts like bearings for the rollers on a round baler or fingers for a pickup real. Really thinking about starting to go over to Agco/MF. Local dealers there (12 miles) is really great and carries a lot of parts in stock! Parts counter guys at the closest Deer dealer (RDO) are good but the sales staff isn't interested in talking to you if you are not looking at at a 200k piece of equipment. The New Holland dealer is just too far at 45 miles but is pretty good if I have to go that route.

So good customer service from both the parts counter to the sales office would be it.

How about bussneses that actually appreciate you! By this I mean, alittle curtisy when u are buying from them. And how about a parts supplyer that actually looks at his computor ,not only to see if the part is in stock But also to see if it can be ordered! Ive had Napa and other like stores say "Not available or no we dont stock that, without even looking it up! What ever happened to Customer Service??What happened to shop owners being there when the doors are open instead of playing golf? What happened to small town freindlyness????? Just my thoughts

I"d LOVE to see parts counter help that can do more than just punch up part numbers on a computer. When you ask for a battery for your truck, they don't ask you if it has an automatic transmission, or if it's four wheel drive. Common sense.

And while I understand that companies merge and go out of business, it would be WONDERFUL, in my eyes, that the NEW company that has form keeps the heritage of ALL of the brand that came together. You go to a Case dealership NOW, and all of the garb, toys, ads, etc. focus on the International tractors, but little to nothing is done for the old JI Case brand. Bring back Old Abe!

I would like to know how I can compete with other countries, where there is no OSHA, no EPA, no DNR, little tax enforcement, and no/little insurance premiums to pay, while I have to pay into all of these, and mind you, I still have to make a profit. And this is all "fair" to our esteemed federal government. WHERE ARE THE TARRIFS? We had some, once upon a time. I wonder where they went.

Common sense , consistency , honesty , stop trying to sell me a gallon jug of oil the same size as a 5 qt jug and think I won't notice it 'til I get home!!! Stop using the words "will fit" when you know damn well it ain't like the one I'm replacing. In other words STOP being decieptfull just to make a dime. Replacement and "will fit" DO NOT mean the same thing! Be glad this ain't the old West or some of these "snake oil" salesmen would be gaining a quick "oz of weight" if ya know what i mean.

They got traded away for "Free Trade". And big Ag biz supported that 110% - so they might sorta coulda export more grain.

Quality parts.
I can't afford an $180 part from CNH.
Know better than to pay $60 for the same thing form the land of almost right.
Am willing to pay $120 for a good quality part if I could only find one.

No difference between tractor parts, my lunch at McDonalds, or when I go to the dentist.....Just act like you appreciate my business (and my money) I don't expect miracles, nor do I expect to be treating special. Just treat me like the person who's paying to keep the lights turned on and the doors open.

The parent companies are changing the way they do business, so not every change is under the local dealers control. However, if they want me back again, show me the same consideration THEY expect.

Be fair, be honest, and remember we're all in this together. NO business will be successful unless they allow their customers to succeed.

That said, I have a short list of dealers and vendors that see my dollars. They help me, I help them. It's that simple.

I know we are half a state apart but that my friend is why I am so loyal to my NH dealer. The other dealers here are chain joints now and have kids with a computer behind the parts counter. At the NH dealer there is a one in three chance that the guy go'n to get your part from the back has the same last name as the name on the sign.

I care about the buisness that cares about me.

It's not being shoved down our throats. We as a collective sent a clear message to retailers, that we only care about price.

That said, there are a LOT of tractors that would not be running now if not for cheap chinese parts.

How about these laws only gobberment certified properly trained repair men shall only repair or make adjustments to mechanical handicap equipment bit for hand automotive controls or powered wheelchairs or scooters.
Bro’s scooter had failed to go. We loaded it in truck, took to an authorized repair station. There he was told the machine was obsolete, parts unavailable and un-repairable. The most or best he could get out of the repairman was the motor was shot.
Granted the machine was 9yrs old and had less than a 100hrs on it shoulf make it un repairable nor the owner operator obligated to spend $4200.00 on a new replacement.
The machine brought home, hung of the tailgate, an unauthorized farmer getting into the machine removing motor. The motor jumped in deed it failed to go. However upon that motor there was also a magnetic brake. That brake removed from motor, motor worked, worked good. Taking brake apart it was found brake discs stuck together. Simply taken apart the pieces rubbed together freed of any corrosion build up was removed. All the pieces and parts reassembled the machine’s working tried again before set-down to earth, it worked. On the ground Bro’ aboard it worked just like new, a couple unauthorized Shorthorn country farm DIY mechanics had it working in 2hrs.
So much for the federal, state, insurance, laws and rules….something needs some serious revamping.

Commenting on David G reply:

As a small farmer I want the same respect from my seed/fertilizer/equipment dealers as the big guys get. Seems like I leave message after message and rarely get a return call or email. I'm only 29 and I don't plan to stay small forever. If the suppliers want my business in the future they had better pay attention to me now.
