Diesel Fuel Problem

john Deere 450 would not hold steday RPMs. was acting like starving for fuel. Replaced fuel filter and checked out lift pump. Plenty of fuel to injector pump. I could not remove the return line because the line appears to be stuck in the compression nut.My question, Should it run with return line removed? Is the return line and fittings prone to become clogged? I want to eliminate all simple things before calling a serviceman to remove and repair injector pump.

If it has a Roosa-Master pump, removing the return line is the next step. Also remove the return fitting from the pump cover. More than likely the governor ring has come apart and plugged the return fitting. Common problem. Cleaning fitting will work for a while but governor will fail eventually.

450 dozer? Roosa Master injector pump? They are known for (in general) a piece coming apart inside- plugging return line/fitting, and causing running problems.
Others on here know all the details.

If the return line is clogged. It will cause the pump to build up pressure that will stop the fuel flow. Very common for the seals in the pump to come apart over time.Which will also cause your problem.
