Japanese Hornets

HELP! We have a huge problem with Japanese Hornets. We finally found the nest in a tree and bought every product avaiable to kill them short of a nuclear attack. THEY WON"T DIE! They ate all the grapes - no jelly this year unless we buy from vineyard! They are on the apples and pears and now killing our lilac bushes. Does anyone know how to kill these beasts??? Your inputs are greatly appreciated.

Just spray the nest inside with diesel fuel should work. Or try to get a heavy plastic bag up around the nest and seal it. A blow torch would burn it if you can get all the wasps too.

you can kill them with a torch, but you have to do it when they all go to bed, at NIGHT... and be fast about it,,, good luck

They are actually European hornets. Google for that.
At two different times, I had their nests in buildings. They are more active at night than most other species of stingers. I used a large bug zapper unit for several nights and reduced their numbers significantly. The unit had to be cleaned out every day. The long distance hornet sprays work, but not just for one spray on one night. Mineral spirits paint thinner works if you have way to spray it on the nest. All spraying must be at night.

We've sprayed with gas and other hornets spray killers over a period of one week. Check on them the next day and they are still swarming around the nest. The nest is inside a tree not exposed. You can see the opening of the nest in the hole in the tree. I have been able to get the spray, both gas and hornet killer directly into the nest hole but it just isn't killing them. I like the idea of a bug zapper - it's an idea and will try. Can't use a torch as the tree is located in our hedge row and don't need a fire - although it would get rid of the hornets. But after getting through Irene I don't need any more trees and debris to clean up. Appreciate all the feedback. I really don't want to lose our lilac bushes - they are over 20 yrs old if not older.

So the bees are in a tree? Could you just seal the holes off? Wrap it in plastic till they die off. Better yet, seal it up tight, cut a small hole in it, and spray a few cans of poison in there, and tape the hole shut again.

Diesel fuel will work when nothing else will. It won't evaporate like gas. As a bonus when the residue oil gets on the wings of the ones you don't hit they can't fly so they die too. Just don't tell the epa.

Could you possibly have Japanese beetles instead? They destruct several species of plants including grapes
beetles

Just type in the insect you want to exterminate and it will give you the product be able to do it.
Just be sure that it is a Japanese hornets, I do agree with the other fella that suggested diesel fuel.

Well - newest problem is with Irene it pushed the tree over a bit and cracked right where the nest was. We haven't noticed as many hornets around and are suspecting they may be moving to a new location. We still see a few around the old nest but not as many. They are all over our lilac bush and stripping the bark from it. So if they are moving to another area we lost our window of opportunity but not without effort. What about sevin dust on the lilac - does anyone think that would kill the hornets if they ingested sevin dust? We are going to look at Lowe's today for something to put in the tree and just checked out our bug zapper and it still works and will try that tonight. I was hoping we could put something out by the bushes that they would ingest and hopefully take this back to the queen and eventually kill them all.

Not beetles - they are about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long yellow/orange hornets. Have seen them referred to as European or Japanese. They are extremely aggressive too.

No the hole in the tree is about 20-25 feet up and if we put a ladder up at night I would feel like bait! Good idea but I don't want to spend the night in the hospital. Other issues are a lot of ground growth around the tree so it's makes it difficult to manuver.

Tape a can of urethane foam to the end of a long cane pole, rig a cord to pull the trigger on the can and fill the hole with foam.

Im thinking they are an invasive species and you maybe could get help from the county agent or something like the d n r,wouldnt want to see those beggars taking over !!

I looked up the European hornets, and they are carnivores. They eat other insects, the japanese beetles are not in this country. Are you sure what they are?

As far as your lilacs go you can cut them 1-2 feet off the ground and 3 years latter they will be 6-8 feet high again

try some brake cleaner or carb cleaner it burns your hands when you get it on you it would probably kill them i know it works on wasp

Electro motive Electrical parts cleaner is pure Clorinated solvent. It kills insects dead right now. Wasps drop like a hand full of good and plenty (they do not even wiggle more than a few seconds, it is a nerve toxin to insects.) A spray rig for painting lines or marking ground wires might let it be held on a pole. The little tube that sticks in the spray nozzle will help direct it into the hole. THis would prevent diesel from killing the tree, it will, the spray will not Jim

Think it was the little white headbands with the red dot they were wearing..........
