Teeny Diesel Engines

I am building a pulling tractor for the garden tractor pulls. I grafted a 4- speed rear end out of a 20HP Cub Cadet to a Ford LGT 14D. I've got a rolling chassis at this time, but I can't finish it because I can't get any help with the engine. All I want to do is put a little turbo on it and maybe have some oversize plungers fabricated. I tried a couple places in Diesel Power magazine, but they won't return my e-mails. (Mass Diesel was one of them,I can't think of the other). Does anyone know of a source for this kind of thing? Thanks, Fritz

Elkhart County (Northern Indiana) Garden Tractor Pullers Association has or did have a few years back a guy that pulled with a Diesel. It ran just like the big dogs blowing smoke the whole way. don't know his name I only watched him pull. The club's web site is, www.freewebs.com/ecgtpa.

Have you thought about supercharging it with a GM 454 smog pump? Your engine has a radiator and associated fan belt that can be used to drive the pump. Just a thought.

Several years ago I knew of a man who had put a turbo from a 650 Yamaha Seca on Cub Cadet with a Kubota in it. At the time he was only running 5 or 6# of boost, so I don't know how it turned out after development.

Well, I guess my Model Diesel engines would not count..!!!
I make my own Diesel fuel for them..
Getting real hard to buy Ether in quantity..have to use JD either. mix it with Kerosene, 2-cycle oil and a little Amyl Nitrate..
Runs SO GOOD.!!!
The Amish use Diesels often..even small ones af around 4 HP..I think direct injected...
Guess they won't work here...!!

My son works for CAT and was in England at the Perkapillar factory. He said you can't believe how small some of those diesels are and what their power output is. Might be a place for you to look.

There was a company at NFMS show this year that had turbos for Deere Gators and something else.I looked into it for Deere compact but I didn't need the HP that bad.

Guy at my work thats a diesel pickup bogger had a diesel magazine with an articles about a guy that put a diesel in a minivan. It was from a semi trailer reefer unit, some Jap diesel (Mits?) In a dodge minivan I think. I believe 1.6L or smaller.

Thanks for all the help, lots of good ideas. But what can be done with the pump? What is the common practice on full size tractors?

The injection pump body maybe a common unit that uses larger pump elements for other applications.
Larger pump elements will require higher injector tip flow. The pump and injectors need to be matched other wise #1 power won't increase. Or #2 the pump breaks due to line/injector flow restriction.
Add air and fuel while watching the exhaust pyrometer. Stop at 1200F or use an intercooler and/or water injection to keep temps down.
Save yourself some time and $$$ by purchasing thr engine HP you want. Instead of trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Typically the pump is adjustable. For example, with full size ag tractors when a turbo is added the pump is simply "turned up" to increase fuel flow/power. For major power increases needed in the serious pullers this is not enough and larger pumps injectors can be installed. There of course are probably other methods I am not familar with.

In the case your pump is adjustable you may want to add the turbo and simply turn up the pump. The power increase can be significate and you can get your tractor sorted out and verify your combination works - before spending more money.

There is one for sale on pulloff.com. I think it is a Merc. diesel. Call Columbas diesel fro the pump and turbo. One of the best in the bussiness. Not going to be the cheapest but you will be hard pressed to beat their work.
