OT-2002 Buick Century

Thought I'd ask the opinion of the pros. Stopped out to see my daughter today. Reminded her she needs to get her car inspected and she laid a laundry list on me. Seems her car isn't shifting properly in any forward gear. Just revs when it's suppose to shift but will eventually drop in. Along with that she say the car bogs down when trying to accelerate..

I'm just guessing throttle position sensor. What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

i would check the fuel filter first and if thats ok check the cat converter, those cars are notorious for them getting plugged and alot of times misdiagnosed as a trans problem. check to see if the engine will rev up normally in park or neutral. that will tell ya if its one of these.

I also have the same problem with my buick. am i going to buy a new buick parts? I've checked already the fuel filter. hmm what am i going to do please help  :(

Many of the local auto parts store will scan for trouble codes for free. This will help in pointing you in the right place to start your trouble shooting process. One test is much better than a guess.

My guess would be mass air flow sensor or plugged exhaust.

I"m thinking the revving before it shifts is the computer delaying the upshift, because the exhaust is back pressuring. This would also explain the bogging down stuff.

Look closely for signs of head gasket issues, if it has the 3.1 or 3.4 and some miles on it, they can have issues. Antifreeze will kill the catalytic converter.

A dirty or faulty mass air flow sensor can do the same thing.

Alot of times either problem wont throw any codes. Good luck BW

Last problem I had with my '98 buick century was the transmission modulator.

I was loosing transmission fluid but didn't realize it was pumping it up to the intake and I was burning it with my fuel.

First time I've dealt with a transmission modular and it threw me for a while from loosing transmission fluid but no leak under the car.

If you're not loosing fluid, I suppose it's not the modular but to be honest, I'm still not sure of the function of that little part.

"I'm still not sure of the function of that little part."

The modulator uses changes in intake manifold vacuum (which are indicative of engine load) to vary transmission control oil pressure, which affects when shifts occur and how "firm" they are.

For example, LOW manifold vacuum translates into LOAD, (got your foot into it) which makes shifts occur LATER, but FIRMER.

98 would've been the last year they used a modulator. 99 up went to the fully computer controlled 4T65E. Now the computer and a variable solenoid took its place.

WOW you're really goood! i asked my brother to help me fixing my car, I said someone said it's mass air flow sensor, and yes it is. thank you very much I love youu! :))
