nother scrap topic

what have tractors specifically have you seen go to the scrap yard or knew somebody that has taken tractors. models brands conditoin ect. i know ive seen peopl on hear say theve taken or going to take some tractors, on cl seen omebody going to take a left over parts case 2670. not entirly sure if he has or not yet. somebody in ohio that scraped a ford 8000 that didnt run. the motor was free but he thought the trany was bad. i called him asked how much he said 2500. ya right.

I have seen a Case CC and Farmall Ms & Hs sitting at a couple of local scrap yards, however, they are sitting off to the side and have not been crushed. I was able to save 2 Case CCs from a scraper, if I had not bought them they WOULD have been crushed.

Just recently saw ALOT of heavy equipment like dozers, loaders, haul trucks, excavators, graders, etc go to a local scrap yard after the owner died. In fact the majority of the stuff has already been taken in, cut up, and gone out, but I'm told items are still trickling in. One item I know for a fact that was taken in was a D9 CAT sized Komatsu dozer with a three shank ripper. It had been sitting for years and I had actually inquired with the owner about a sell price since I had a customer looking. Not even knowing if it ran after so many years of sitting he wanted both arms and a log for the thing....so it was left setting. What i heard was they spend a few hours and gave it a little TLC to get it running, pulled it on a trailer, and took it about 1/2 mile down the road and unloaded it at the scrap yard......Yep, running dozer that size scrapped out.....makes me sick.
I've heard the owner was the kind of guy that would basically buy a new machine of one went down and the repair wasn't something really ovbious or wasn't something that could be handled like 'right now'. Have a friend that had looked at a grader that they told him just needed a new head as the one on the engine was cracked and leaking. Yep, you guessed it, the grader went to scrap too.....

I was in a accident this summer and my Farmall M was on the trailer and got damaged. The insurance company totaled it and said that I could buy it back for the salvage price of 800.00.

Around here it has mostly been picked over carcases and machines that has been parted out.

Seeing as I've been to tractor scrap yards I've seen all kinds of tractors there. Got a relation who owns a scrap business. He has crushed quite a few. Mostly old ones like WD/WCs, IH, Case and JD. If they are in pretty fair condition he keeps em and tractors are the last thing he scraps.

2 sides to this. I don't think we will ever get to the day when they are all gone but we will get to the day that only collectors have em. As more modren tractors get cheap the hobby farmers are going to go to them. There old AC and IH's and JD's will get sold to collectors. Case in point, an old M is worth 900 to 2K based on condition. A beat up 300 utility is a 2500 dollar tractor. The M isn't good for much without adding live hydrauics and a 3 point on a farm but a 300 utility is a nice hobby farm or chore tractor. Collector tractors will get larger over time because that's what the farms have gone to.

You also have the problem of kids setteling out estates. They sell the farm an the buyer wants the old stuff off before they sign the papers. These kids are not going to spend mayby months trying to sell that old stuck WC setting in the woods. They are going to call the local scrap place. If they do try selling it they are going to ask way too much and think anyone trying to tell em what it's really worth is trying to rip them off. Then they get mad and sell it to a scrapper to prevent one of those rip off collectors from getting it.

I have an M. It gets used to pull wagons and a manure spreader. I have a Ford 8N that gets used in the garden, I plowed 10 acres this spring with it. Runs a brush cutter, post hole auger and a finish mower. That 3 point makes all the difference in the world. I also have a 1206 IH. That has a loader for round bales, runs the snow blower (important in MN) haybine and round baler.....field work too. I'm looking for a replacement for the M. For the cost of add ons I can buy a newer tractor ( really want a 3000 or 4000 Ford). The 1206 and 8N are keepers.

I love tractors but I'm not a good show goer.....To me an H is an H is an H. I can only look at so many H's. I don't really understand this collector stuff. I love owning tractors and using em but to have one, in the barn that sees daylight once or twice a year for a show or parade??????? Not knocking it, just aint my thing. I'd rather be cutting hay or fishing than at a tractor show. If it's the wrench thing that I can understand but what about doing one and then selling it. I know that most of the time you are not going to get your money out of it but it's a hobby. Hobbies cost money!

it is a shame, i realize we cant save 'em all, but while i can see sending say a parts tractor thats broken in half thru the bellhousing to scrap after usable parts have been removed, its a shame to send running tractors to scrap just because some city kid inherrited it and dont have a place to store it or urban sprawl takes over what was once farmland and all the old iron out in the fencerow is hauled to the scrapper just to get it gone, then it all comes back to us in the form of cheaply made low quality junk from china

exactly my point that all you made. id rather have it sit in the fence row than it for scrap. yes take all the good parts and scrap the rest i can do that but not a perfectly good running tractor or something that needs a trany or engine rebuild unless it is inrough shape.

This is what's called ignorance. Sell a set of disc harrows for 50 bucks, a Dearborn plow for 30, then need some again, go to tractor supply buy both for ? $1500? then curse the Chinese for making junk out of all our precious heirlooms, that was sold for beer money. There is a guy Elmer? near you, would part out perfect working tractors, just cause he has a customer looking for one big ticket part, but he never scraped them for iron, just sold parts till there was nothing left but a greasy spot in the dirt. I bought a MF165 a few days ago for scrap, I think it's a stuck valve...

We almost cut up our 40-H to stave off foreclosure on our farm... What saved it was the fact that there was no way we could finish it in two weeks. This is one time fate went in the other direction. I'm so glad now we didn't go through with it. That 500 gallons of hydraulic oil would have been nice though...

Neighbor kid scrapped a MH 44 for 300 but only took 150 home due to the fella that hauled it in charged him a "fair" price of 150. 44 just needed valveguides and reassembled. Bummer.
