I think its funny how small the first are. Buff Orphingtons we got day old chicks in March.

I've had 1st eggs the size of your thumb. Had one without a shell also, just the membrane inside like a water balloon. Pretty fascinating, especially for kids......

Not always the first ones are small but yes often. I have also seen them very small just out of the blue and you never know why. Had one not long ago that you could set on a nickle and see the edge of the nickle all the way around. I have also had eggs that are extra long and narrow

Most of our first were small too. We have production reds and barred rocks right now, all are laying.
You should get some odd chickens for the little girl to help raise. I pick up some surprise specials from Ideal now and then, always fun to see what you get as they grow. This one was from a year or two back, we called her the punk rocker and our grandaughter just loved her!

Funny! We had production reds first. They laid everyday for about 15 months then nothing.
like turing off a facett.
We ate them, another lesson for the kids.
