OT Large dairy farms moving hay

I live in NW Indiana and we have 2 large daires around us. Today going through town there was a semi haul the large square bales with one bale hanging over the side with the cars driving right next to this bale. As he makes his turn up the road out of town the bale falls of the truck and he leaves it on the side of the road. I have to wonder 1. If there had been a car or biker there that could have kill someoneand 2. Why not put straps on your trailer? This is not the first incident to happen and both round bales and square bales. Let's put it where it belongs.... The truck driver was the idiot, not the farmer..Even if the driver worked for the farm he/she is responsible for his actions.

I thought that all trucks had to strap loads.I know commercial freight haulers have to strap or chain load to trailer. He must not of been watching his load.He should have got it off the road as soon as he saw load was shifting.

Did you actually view this or just repeating what something said they saw?

If you saw it you should have found the name of the trucker and called that company with what you saw.

A few years ago Someone was hospitalised in Southern, IN. a bale fell off a trailer on a state highway at night, & that person smacked it coming the opposite direction. Yes; Straps are safer; but talk to a farmer about putting them on. I know one that all he has to do is pull a safety pin, & rotate the trailer with a lever dumping all the bales at once. If he had to put straps on; he'd go crazy. Probably would sell the trailer!

Yes, they should be strapped. No, it's not fun trying to throw a strap over the top of a load of round bales if they are stacked 2 high. To get the strap over the crown of the top bale someone almost has to be crawling around on the bales to place the strap. The crawler has to be young and athletic and a daredevil to say the least. If it's windy it's even harder. And if it's full sized round bales the bales are hanging over the edge of the trailer making it hard to hook the strap to the rub rail if plain old straps with hooks are used. So that's why you don't see round bales strapped down on semi trailers. Square bales aren't nearly as challenging. Jim

In Texas if a bale of hay falls off and the Highway Patrol/Deputy Sheriff catches them a ticket is issued for "unsecured load" and a DOT inspection on equipment will be performed.

i sold hay for many years to a trucker from Minn and he loaded 2 wide 2 high big rounds and threw staps over all the bales not to bad if you know how if the wind was blowing he would park so the wind helped
