It ain't junk!

Took a load of scrap metal to the recyclers this morning, had 660 lbs, got $79.00. But I get ticked every time I go because of the things I see being junked. Unloaded and was pulling back around to the scales, looked over to my right and there was a 2 bottom plow, looked like a Dearborn, a three bottom plow, don't know but it had some green paint on it, and a tractor mount mowing machine! I mean those things were in good condition! I would have been proud to pull one of the plows behind my tractor! (Well, my TO30 wouldn't pull the three bottom, but you know what I mean.) Around here you go to a sale and they go crazy bidding over stuff like that. Guess I'll just never figure people out.

Easy to figure out! People will bid like crazy at a sale and want everything for nothing when they buy from private party! If i got to give it away, I might as well sell it for scrap!Got a 560 farmall chasis going tomorow. Crime, but cant keep it any longer, tired of it being arround here.

I am slowly finding the same thing. Been trying to sell stuff and get low ball offers that are half of scrap value. Some of it is loaded onto the trailer to go to the local consignment auction and the next load to the scrapper will include a 50"s IH pickup, Dearborn rake, 72 F-250 that has been rolled, and a Case drill. It sitting around doesn"t buy me better rarer projects!

Last week I took a load of batteries in. See my farmer neighboe coming out in his pickup. Guy in the end loader is carrying their sugarbeet topper. Complete with tires and POWERSHAFT. he says bearing went out and its $100. too much to fix it. I would have loved to get the pto shaft for some of my old implements, but too late.

I agree with Bob when people buy from a private party they want it give to them. I will haul to a junk yard before I give it away.

Yeah, I know they want a private party to give their stuff away, been there. But like I said, around here, you go to an estate sale and it goes out of sight. A few years ago I went to several sales looking for some good used equipment, and was astounded at what some stuff sold for.

Talk about low ball offers -- Been trying to sell a Detroit 3 cyl for $1400.00 see on EBay most going between 2000 3000 and nothing wrong with this one but the offers keep coming in.-- ready to pull the head and make a flower box.... GRRRRrrrr!!

I Have a bunch of old tractors for parts people want the parts for nothing, expect perfect parts off a 60 year old tractor etc, more money and less aggravation in them just to scrap them out.

Had a 1962 Gmc dump that ran and moved.Couldnt muster $300 when I had it for sale,Scrap yard gave me $850,do the math its a no brainer. Bill

Hang in there gentlemen.
I purchased an old lost cause composite one ton dump truck from a fellow who'd rather seen somebody get some use out of it rather than scrap it. Yeah, I could have easily made a few bucks on it. It's taken some fixing, and has turned out to be an enjoyable strong driver. Hauling grain, hay, and dirt. I still owe it. A couple rocker panels this winter will re-strengthen the cab. My best farm use toy buy of the year.
You think you’re seeing some potential junk? Ask about it! You may just be surprised.

Don't like to see it go, but you got to remember if everything was saved. My disappointment is that to much raw metal going overseas.

If they are a good natured gang, you can drop off you junk, and load up the stuff you see. But don't cry if you owe them a few bucks on the way out. Other people's junk might weigh more that your junk. A pair of brothers I know do that all the time. One loads up a trailer with scrap, for some extra cash. Sends his brother to the yard, who comes home with as much or more as the trailer left with. And had to pay for the extra weight on the way out. what fights they have then!

(quoted from post at 04:25:28 08/13/11) You can't buy anything around here from a scrap yard. junk yard yes, but not a scrap yard
an still do that here. Our local yard owner was easy, you seen sumtin you could use,he would charge just a bit over scrap(CASH only, he clamed he pays scrap so as long as he can make a buck, may as well move it,anything hydr he would give away(no charge)Every body liked the guy and he made lots a dough under the table.
The guy he sold it to 2 yrs ago has a diff opinion. That fella figgeres you bring it,it's no use to ye,If You want it,than its got to be worth money.

Result, nobody likes the new guy and business dwindels,he's lookin for a buyer

Got a call this week, friend needs 40 ft. container loaded and moved to another site. Gives me two dead pickup trucks for the move and bought a dead 60 series Chevy dump truck for $400. Carried all to scrap yard got $2613. Not a bad days work.

HAd the same thing happen to me a while ago- took in a load of aluminum wheels, and as I was ready to leave saw a nice back blade under a pile of old wahing machines. A buddy of mine just got his first tractor, I knew he needed some 3 point stuff, I bought it for him at scrap value...$45 bucks.
Looked like some moonshiners went outta business last week- I swear I saw more hand soldered sheet copper in there than ever. Ya know scrap values are up when stills are getting scrapped!
