I have a dove that went down my chimney and is above the damper. I can see the bird, but can't reach it. Anyone have any ideas on how to get the thing to come out? Stan

Build a fire. Worked for my friend when he had a coon in there. Coon was moving fast when he came out the chimney, but I nailed him. Mark

Open the damper. He'll come out. (in the house) Or just ignore him, he'll die in a few days. They can't fly straight up. Or at least they think they can't.

I had the exact same thing happen to me - a mourning dove found its way to the bottom of my chimney and fluttered there next to the damper. I used duct tape and taped the handle of a large strainer - the size to put over a small pail, maybe 8" to 10" diameter - to three 5' interlocking extention poles from my snow roof rake. I got up on my roof and put the strainer on the 15' pole down my chimney and after about 5 tries I got the bird in the strainer and slid the strainer up the chimney and against a side of the chimney so the bird wouldn't fall out. He/she was a little dirty but it flew away. I immediately put a steel mesh screen over the chimney opening. I felt I had a choice of helping it out or letting it die and smelling up my house. I'm happy with my choice and hope it works for you.
