Nice looking car for being 48 years young. I think that 63 Mercury we had used 8:25X14 tires.
We used tires from Montgomery Ward and I think Firestone made their tires. My brother-in-law came in from MI and had tire problem on the trip down. It had Firestone tires and I told him they were known for throwing their steel belts.

It was getting late and he wanted know where to get another tire so I told him Wards was open late back then and their tires were made by Firestone. He bought a tire only this one had Montgomery Ward on it. He was a vice president in the Michigan Mutual Insurance Co. They bought him a new car every 2 years. He had taken over their NY office back in the late 1960's and was later promoted and moved back to Detroit. Hal

very nice.............there's a product called scratchout in a yellow bottle for a couple bucks that will take away that dead paint. Some wax afterwards and you'll have something that has 10 times the character of a fresh paintjob.

Nice condition too, my grandmother had a '64 with a 390, (2 door if I recall right, that was a long time ago) black and white top, looked like a cop car, one of three brothers who were mechanics at our ford tractor dealership had the exact same model and color, I remember riding in that, was a neat car with some pep, kinda leaned towards my grandad's 56 t-bird though, fun old cars, still can't get over the condition that looks to be in, nice color, looks original and only needs buffing and polishing.

It's going to take a pro with polishing compound, swirl remover and glaze products to do that car right, and without going through the paint to primner.

I had a 63 black convertiable with a red gut. But I cant remember the tire size yes it was a Galixie 500
O what a car, those were the days

dang it... had a 63 gal 500 xl.. a chrome 5000 lb sled.. 390 bored to 406, 3 duces and 3/4 track cam... got 6 mpg and 1000 miles to a set of rear tires...

Mine was a 63 1/2 fastback, two door hardtop. 427 Police interceptor with tri-power carbs. Solid lifters. 3 on the tree w/overdrive. Never did find top end, chichened out. Would run 115 in second overdrive. Mash the gas pedal @ 70 and the overdrive would kick out (like a passing gear in an auto) and break the rear tires loose. Soft canary yellow, real sleeper. Put many Chevelles and Camaros to shame. Couple 'stangs and goats too. Man, what memories.

Dean, Yep 390, 4 brl w/automatic. Don't trust the tires enough to hold the gas pedal to the floor!

You are aware those are replacement tires, right? I owned 2 63 Galaxies. I have the original owners manual, from one of them, in my hands. There are NO alpha-numeric tire sizes listed. Alpha-numeric tires were not manufactured that early. That car would have had 7.75-14 or 8.25-14 tires. I also checked my original 1966 Pontiac owners manual and my orginal 1968 Chevrolet pickup manual. No alpha-numeric tires listed in either one of them.

A beauty! You made me curious so I went & dug out the manual for my '62. There's no indication of tire brand. I thought they were Firestones. I'm pretty sure that's what the original spare was. Whatever they were, the manual states the tire warranty is the tire manufacturer's responsibility. The two tire options for the medium & full-sized Fords are 7.50x14 & 8.00x14. Inflate to 24 (cold) PSI. If you plan on hammering on it or have it weighted down, you should add an extra 4 PSI. You might say a few bad words if you lose a tire @ 93mph.

Thanks for the pics!
Mike

yep thats a nice find and catch./// how about a 69 mercury marquis convertible , black on black red pin stripe , continental alum sunburst wheels ,, 429 /4v edelbrock auto matic , split bench seats with cold air ,, only 300 thousand miles

I bought a 427 out of a 63 Galaxie in 1974 and it was 1 4bbl. Rebuilt it and installed in my 68 Mustang GT that was originally a J code 302 4-bbl, 4 speed, 3:50 rear. Put a 3:00 rear with the 427 and I too never found out top speed, but that little car was quick. Went to work in Angola in 1980, sold car to brother who refurbed it and reinstalled the 302. He sold that 427 engine several years ago for a couple grand. Wished I still had both!

My parents had a 63 two door, cream like your roof, red interior. don't know the engine, I was too small then, a 6? but I remember it burned oil, like a quart a day. My father bought Wolf's head in 5 gallon pales- still have one around here, poured it in a glass quart jar with a tin funnel screwed on it. That is still around someplace too. It lasted till 68?, they traded it for a 'fairlane fastback'... that didn't even last that long- 1972? 73? that was the begining of the end of US cars for a loong time... our caravan will be 18 next month... go figure.

I had the 64 convertable, Black with white top, 352ci with rochester quadrajet, automatic tranny. Totaly useless in the 1/4 mile, but out on the open road it would do 135mph. Loved that car..

I had a 63' 2-door back in H/S. It had a 352 with the cruisomatic trans. Bought it for $150.00. The only time it let me down was the time I had a couple of neighborhood girls with me that wanted to do some drinking/partying. I was cruising through town and noticed the water temp was going up. Pulled off and found the dang waterpump leaking out the tell tale hole. Of all the nights. Still, she was a good car, Just jealous, I guess.

128 mph was my top end.. and at anything over 90 it road-walked badly.. so it was a challenge to keep it between the ditches. it also was a blue two door...
