pool chlorine for herbicide?

I was told that pool chlorine was a cheap herbicide. Will this work? What mix ratio should I use? i just need a burndown, not a systemic. Are there any cheap herbicides on the market? I use roundup for a systemic.

Yep, way cheap, but it won't do much damage to the weeds, and chlorine gas at low concertrations is deadly to people, and given an oxidizer it will start almost anything on fire. Report back and let us know how it works out. I have been a firefighter/parametic/hazmat specialist for years. Without people like you I would be out of work.

Thanks for the warning about the chlorine;I'm not going to risk hurting someone to save a dollar. The vinegar/salt idea will be tried. I came here for advice FIRST and it paid off.

Well just to add to the discussion..homemade roundup is made the following way.
1 gallon vinegar
1 cup salt
1 cup liquid detergent
Blend together and spray on.

The detergent acts as a surfactant to penetrate waxy leaves and makes a film that hold the other components on the plant. The vinegar is an acid and begins to destroy the leaves and the salt will kill root systems.

Per how much area, per acre?

Two of the big concerns in farm country are the buildup of salts from commercial fert & manure in drier areas, as well as needing lime for acidic soils.

So - is adding acid & salt to your ground really a good idea?

Generic Roundup costs about 2 - 2.50 an acre this year, how much does the salt & acid cost?

I'm not getting this.

Salt has traditionally been used to poison out lands from ever being used. Medium concentrations doesn't seem to hurt our northern road sides. Generic round up is cheap and works.

what's it called and where are you buying it?

I have used straight clorox bleach in a pump sprayer and it works okay for the weeds in the gravel driveway. I also mix roundup in sometimes.
