poop spreader floor??

Hey folks, new wagon has a good floor in it but shows signs of damage from constant poo contact. Idea is to park t near and clean stall/paddocks til full then unload rather than pile up then load/unload the same day. Anything that will keep the poo infested moisture from ruining the wood? Just a good deck stain or the used oil/diesel fuel (or just used oil) spill??

Thanks, Dave

Neighbor bought a new spreader about the same time
I did back in the early 80's.

He soaked his with oil every year. He also left
his sit outside the farrowing house and added to
it daily till it was full. Emptied it about twice
a month.

It lasted about 8 years.

I always piled my pooh then loaded and dumped the
same day. Then put the spreader back in the shed
where it could dry. Mine got oiled as well.I still
have that spreader with no signs of rot.

Just saying staying wet is hard on wood.

I don't really care for the oil thing.....yer going to get some contamination into the ground. I do use veggie oil on mine. It's old and in good shape.

(quoted from post at 06:29:28 08/09/11) There are some poly sheet liners that do a good job. That would be your best bet I would think.

Dude..You's a genious! I just saw some pvc roofing sheets that were smooth in the BB store the other day. The chain and cross hatches should drag over them just as easy as the wood bed shouldn't it? They are only 1/8 inch thick I believe.

Dave, do a google search for "Sand Hills Plastic". THey recycle plastic milk jugs. I use their stuff for spreader flooring and it works wonderful. I use the 1/2" stuff. 'Might be able to find some product similar where you live.

Can"t give you any long term results since I have only owned my ?50? year old New Idea #19 spreader for the last 5 years. Previous owner had put new bottom and sides into it. Looks like it was white oak fence rails to me. My operation is similar to yours in that spreader sits until full then gets emptied. Been pressure washing at least annually and "painting" with used oil. So far so good as far as rot. I don"t expect it to last forever, but expect to be able to replace boards as needed or all at once in a fraction of the time I save by not moving manure twice.

YMMV,

Kirk

you can buy deck boards in just about any deminsion made from recycled plastic also in all the BB stores here. Guess that would be an option also. Just use it til it's time to replace and use them instead of wooden boards.

I had to replace mine a couple years ago- I sprung for a sheet of marine plywood. Its spendy enough already, but I had to get a 10 foot sheet, because the floor was 8' 6". Special order, about 75 bucks, as I recall. But not much compared to the hassle of having to do it again in a few years.

We park it in the barn aisle, wife cleans stalls into it, then I spread on Saturday. Bottom would sure last longer if kept empty, then filled all at once and spread, but we're not keen on handling the stuff twice.

You need to get the floor and sides clean and dryed out and coat them with 3 coats of old moter oil (diesel is best) with a brush. Been doing this for 40+ years with no problems. Bandit

there is a flooring plywood actually looks like scrap boardI think is call T-11 or some such thing. I put it in my boat floor six years ago and urethaned it . It sits uncoverd outside and still looks great. It is waterproof and warenteed for 50 years.(could be T 56 or something like that. Your stores mighthave that.

That's what I did with mine, just screwed it down making sure that the screws weren't in places where they could catch on the chain. Got mine from Farmtek. Has worked good so far (only been on for one year)

Dave look at this link. I have used this Poly covering in several wooden floored manure spreader. The boards where getting bad in spot but where still solid enough to carry a load. I used this to line the floor with one of them is still going after ten years. What I really like about it is that the manure/bedding will not freeze to the Poly insert.
