Oliver Tractors

I am a JD man that has recently been bit by the Oliver bug. I have none and that is my problem. My neighbor has several and that is how I got bit. I like the 66 77 88 99 and the later models. I could use a tractor to rake hay with so I did not have to unhook the rake(am I pitiful) and I was thinking about starting out with something like a 1655 Diesel. Is there a better choice? I am a bit of a perfectionist so I would want something in top used condition or restored. Any suggestions about model and where to look to find potential candidates?

Guess I'm a bit of a traditionalist- if you want to rake (or bale) hay, I'm thinking a 77 diesel- wonderful old tractor. Nothing like that 6 cylinder diesel loafing along, smoooooth as can be.

1655 is definitely overkill for any kind of haying, but of course, the final determination is yours. They're great tractors, as well.

There's no better choice in the Oliver line-up for haying than a 1650 or 1655 diesel.A more modern version is a White 2-70.Check at YTmag ads off to the left of the page and on www.external_link

I agree that 1655 is overkill for raking , but you would have a hard time to beat it on a haybine, or a baler. Even on the rake it is much more comfortable to operate than a two digit or even a 3 digit oliver.Dont get me wrong they are great old tractors, and definitley will get the job done, but for one thing with the 1655 you usualy get the over under which works nice on corners etc.Not to mention the much improved hydralic system.

Speaking of haying with an Oliver reminded me of an incident when I was a kid back in the fifties. Next door neighbor had hay to be baled and the man came to do the job had a Farmall cub or A, (can't remember, been a long time), to pull the side delivery rake. Well, he made about two trips around the field and they started baling with an Oliver 88 pulling a baler that operated off the PTO, In just a few minutes the Oliver was gnawing at the back end of the hay rake! They had to get a larger tractor to pull the rake in order to stay ahead of the Oliver! I laugh every time I think about that.

From my own experience you NEED a good muffler on anything that has a detroit in it. I think the oliver 77,770,88,880,99,990 would be GREAT for pulling a rake, and can be had pretty cheap in good condition. If you are stuck on the bigger tractor I agree that you might find something else to do the raking because you enjoy it so much

Thanks fellas for all of the wonderful response!
The noise factor is something to consider and in the back of my mind I am kind of thinking it would be fun to do more than just raking ;) That was a great story about the Oliver baling behind the Farmall! I had not thought about the White lineup, but I had thought about the more updated conviences of the comfort level and hydraulics of the 1650-5 series. I know this economy has had an effect on these classic tractor prices like everything else. What would I expect to have to pay for a restored 1650-5 or a top original? Thanks so much gents.

We've got a 1655 diesel that we rake with and feed round bales with. Great tractor! Hydraul-Shift is the best auxiliary transmission ever built. Brother in law says I love that old tractor like St.Peter loved the Lord!

it is overkill but i rake all our hay with my 1655. it is also a great baler tractor and good for mowing hay if you use a haybine. they dont bump around as much as other old tractors in my opinion and the 3 speed is an excellent feature. IMHO there isnt a better haying tractor than a 1655.

price wise i think you can expect to pay over 7 or 8k if you want one in really nice condition.

if you have any more questions the oliver forum on here is a great place to get info.

Thanks again for the responses and encouragement. I believe I will set my first sights on a 1655 Diesel. Are all of the 1655's direct injection diesels? Did they use the same diesel motor all the way thru the 1655 production run? If you hear of any leads on a real nice original or a keen restoration please forward them as I would like my first Oliver to be something I would be very proud to own.
