IH 3414 slipping

My IH 3414 is slipping. It is going into gear from the hydrashuttle not at all, then sort of all at once and it will lose its giddyup sometimes when I go up a hill, etc. I did a transmission service on it and changed all the fluids (after the problem) and I realized there is a pretty bad leak by the differential where one of the axles is bolted on. I have no idea how to fix that leak (there is probably a gasket, but it'd be darn impossible to take the axle off without a huge gantry as the rear wheels basically support the whole machine. I also have no idea if the slippage is something really bad or not. Hoping jdemaris can give me some ideas. I saw a thread on an IH3414 and he was recommenting a pin, but I don't know if this problem is the same or not ...and the leak is another issue. My IH is a diesel with a nice working backhoe. tia

PS ... I did some backdragging with the machine and used the brakes to steer against the tranny...hope this wouldn't hurt it...I'd say I did it for an hour or two total.

Does this thing have a torque converter or is it direct drive with power shift, like a 500 crawler? Either way, it sounds like a suction leak, cause intermittent clutch apply. Yes, the slippage is bad as it will smoke the clutches. If it were a converter problem,(if it has one) I don't think the problem would come and go as you describe. They get excessive clearance and just stay gutless all the time. I doubt steering it with the brakes while backdragging caused any problems. You need to get some of these leaks fixed. Also, find a manual and find out how to do pressure checks on the hydra shuttle. If you've serviced the trans, that's your next move. Fritz.

It must have a converter, because it has a converter pressure gauge-don't think it works. I will get a manual and do the P checks.

You need to fix the gauge anyhow... why not fix it now? It may tell us what we need to know. For instance, if it fluctuates randomly, the pump could be sucking air. Or, low and steady, possible seal leakage. Of course get the manual, but in the meantime, why not give it a whirl. Fritz

The line for the gauge is cut, so I'll have to find the entire gauge. I ordered a manual, but not sure I got the right one. It is a IH 3414 Torque Shuttle Transmission Manual
