Mystery Garden Critter

I thought racoons were getting in my corn patch, but I can't find any tracks. They pull down three or four stalks but eat all the kernels from each cob. It seems to happen at night, which makes me think coon. I have a bowl of flybait, but have not found any dead critters. Tonight I'll set a Conibear with some cat food. Any thoughts? Squirels don't seem strong enough to pull down a stalk.

That doesn't sound like a coon as they will just eat a small portion off each ear. And yes squirls can be strong enough to pull down the stalk, Are there anything close that they could be crawling up on and jumping over to the corn? Some squirls I think could go in the 5# range and beaing able to jump down on a stock would be enough I would think to easly break a stock.

I can remember my Wife"s Grandpa planting a field of corn, the edge of which bordered the woods with a crick right there as well.
Raccoons, over a period of time broke over just about every cornstalk in the first two rows.
They definitely destroyed more than they ate!
I think they eat the ends off the ear which is "easy pickins" and then go on to the next.

Had the same problem this year. Normally, coons knock over the stalk but this year my problem was the critters eating the ear on the upright stalk. Never had one knock over. Put up my electric fence with the wires close to the ground and still the problem continued. I fried a couple of squirrels earlier in the season with the fence but did not stop the corn problem.

I think it's coons that eat your corn. With the dry weather and the coons I cut my sweet corn
off and chopped it into small pieces so I can plow it under this Fall. Hal

What your describing i believe its skunks. I had the problem last year, put out a trap and sure enough a skunk.

Sounds like those giant green deerbugs. Too big to swat and kill, so just keep putting out the fly bait mix and you will find a dead one soon enough!

I guess the type of critter can vary from location to location, but in these parts, generally, it is raccoons that destroy corn in that fashion.
