Jahaze or anyone [mounting winch]

Well I just got a ramsey 12000 re winch for my deck-over trailer now I've got to come up with the best way too install it on the trailer. Does anybody have any advice or pic on how they are mounted on there trailers? It would be nice to do it right the first time.

Thats a pretty hefty winch. What type trailer do you have? does it have the tubular sides around it like a landscape trailer, gooseneck, flat car trailer etc.

I have a 8000# winch. When I had my trailer built they put a 2" receiver tube mounted verticaly between the scrub rail and the trailer frame and it is also welded to the tube that comes back from the hitch. I made up a bracket that will hold the winch and just sit it down into the receiver. I do put a pin in it so that it can"t come out accidential when using it or when hauling doen the road. Don"t get the piece of tubing that sits into the receiver too high, as that just gives it more leverage to work against the receiver. I think mine is around 12" above the receiver. I also went to a local truck tarp maker and had a cover made up so the winch is protected from the weather when on the road, especialy winter time. The winch and bracket is a little heavy to remove and put in the shop or truck, but that was my choce to make that way.
Sorry I don"t have any pictures of it and I"m not near the trailer at the present time.

It is a 24ft 12000 lb bumper pull beaver tail deck-over trailer Road Warrior. Made by Friesen Trailer Mfg in Oklahoma I think. It has stake pockets for tie downs. It has a heavy I-beam frame I wanted to be sure I had plenty of winch. The kids are in to mud trucks and and who knows what we will be using it for?

That's interesting. I was thinking about something in sort of the same line. Was thinking about making a mount that would slide into two of the stake pockets in front of the trailer.

Probably the easiest way would be to weld or bolt a heavy plate (maybe 1/2"?) to the toungue and mount it there. Then attach a fairlead (rollers)to the very front of the deck so the cable doesn't rub on the edge. That should leave your deck pretty clear for anything you haul.

Here is how I mounted my 12k Warn winch on all my trailers in 1999. I can also use it in the receiver on back of my truck if need be. I also put a receiver on the front of my truck so I can use the winch in front also.

Here's a link to some pictures of my setup. I would have liked to have made it a receiver mount, but I didn't want the winch sticking out over the deck.

You can only load so close to the front anyway. I had this winch mounted on the front of my 3/4 Ford, I could only use it with when I used my Ford truck.
I was restricted to using one specific vehicle when ever I needed the winch. I figured since I spent that much on a winch I was going to be able to use it where ever and when ever I needed it. I haven't had any problems loading anything on any of my trailers because the winch is out over part of the trailer. I'll give up a little trailer space to be able to use the winch where ever I need it and with what ever truck I decide that I need for a particular haul.

On my 8x18 ft trailer I am using the hole that is in the coupler for trailer jack, I just squared up the upper and lower holes. I do not like the trailer jacks that mount to the coupler anyway and with the center mounted jack ya cannot put your tail gate down. I always weld the bracket on the side of tongue for the side mount jacks, that way I can swing the jack along side the tongue or remove it when hooked to my truck.

I will try to get a picture for you. What I did is welded some heavy 4" x 4" angel iron and 4" x 1/2" flat stock to the front of the trailer to make a cradle that the winch sits in, between the upright supports on my gooseneck trailer. It"s held on with bolts through the cradle. The winch is not easily removeable, which keeps it from walking off. I have a box mounted up in the gooseneck that holds the battery (along with my chains), and a secondary quick-disconnect battery cable that hooks up the one on my truck (f250).

A flat plate 3/8 in. thick, maybe 12 in wide, and long enough to cover the stake pockets, with stakes welded on the bottom to fit in the stake pockets would work. Bolt the winch to the plate. Drill holes in the bottom of the stakes and put pins in, to keep it from pulling out.

reciver hitch locking pin so not stolen mount reciver in a fashion so the winch will not stick out into the bed by putting the reciver stem under the winch not sticking out, however keep it so can be mounted on standard reciver hitch on other trucks. sometimes it's best to have winch mounted on the vehicle thats stuck

Thanks everyone for all the idea's. The receiver hitch way seems to be a good idea but if I set it up that way the kids would be using it on the mud trucks and wrecking it. I'll have to do a little more brain storming. I'll send pic's of the project.Dale

Jahaze if you could get some pics that would be great. If it's not to much trouble. I think I have the same winch as yours[Ramsey12000re].I'm curious how you set up your fairlead in relationship to the winch.
