OT-tragedy and more heat

The news reported six heat related deaths last week, 9 for the year and 4 more deaths are expected to be ruled heat related in the next few days. Terrible.

The current record number of 100+ consecutive days is 42. The forecast for today is 108. This will be day 32 of 100+ temps with no relief forecast for the entire month. There"s little doubt that we will set a new record for the number of consecutive days over 100. With August typically the hottest month, its very probable that its going to get worse.

Talked to my sister who lives in St. Jo, Tx, (northwest of Dallas). It was 112 there yesterday.

I started using a soaker hose around the foundation of our house the first part of June. It runs 24/7. My sister told me she"s seen news reports of slab foundations literally breaking in half.

I"ve heard news reports of pets succumbing to the heat so yesterday when I got home, I wet our two dogs down. I also wet the holes they have dug so the ground is cooler. Today I plan on putting a fan in the garage to help them stay cool. Since the horses are at the farm and I"m in Dallas, there"s nothing I can do to help them.

Even though there are a couple of tropical depressions forming, the high pressure ridge causing the heat will steer them east or south of us.

Keep us in your prayers.

Two weeks ago here in MA my truck said between 105 & 109 when I left work around 3:30. My friend checked the temp. on his cranberry bog around 3:00 and it was 120 on the bog in direct sun. I can't imagine living like that for weeks on end. It was barely 3 days we had that kind of heat and I didn't know what to do with myself. We live less than two miles from the coast as the crow flies so it only got to about 95 at the house. Good luck and hopefully it will break for you soon!

Unloading a wagon load of hay by myself yesterday. Wagon sits outside beside the barn, and I throw 25 or so bales on the conveyor, then I have to go up in the mow and distribute them. Was easily 110 degrees there. Had to come down, rehydrate and cool down after every bunch of bales. Rain forecast, so I"m not going down to neighbors and bring another wagon up, don"t want to get caught. should be out binding the oats today, but don"t wnat to get caught with bundles of oats laying in the field.

Have lost a couple of our livestock (bunnies,) probably due to the heat and humidity. And they"re in a cooler barn basement.

Are slab foundations typical there? No basements? What happens- the ground dries so much that it shrinks, moves, and doesn't support the slab?
Will James look after the horses?
Here in the heart of the Fingerlakes region 4 weeks without measurable precip. during the heat has the outside edges of our corn fields looking sick. I don't have the courage to walk out into the fields. And it's not over yet. So only time will tell.

Not as bad up here in Missouri but it is starting to creep this way. Lots of fields are turning brown and getting to the point that with this heat and it getting dry will not be long before people will need to feed hay. Been in a excessive heat warning now for days and setting new records every day. I very glad I live down in a valley and have water on 3 sides of me but do not know how much longer that water will be here due to the heat. But hey this weather has to come to an end sooner or later just hope it is not to much later

Kansas...spotty moisture from the usual spotty thunderstorms...usually by now the whole state would have had a small shot....1/2 inch at least..

nothing...110 degrees today....soaker hose on trees..

Baled corn stalks all day yesterday on a open station Massey spent most of the afternoon replacing the top roller bearings -- weighed 203# when I started at 7:00am at 9:00pm down to 191# couldn't drink enough! It is pretty miserable!

Nancy, Im about 2 hrs NW of ya, terrible here too. Current time 12 noon Temp 102 already. NO end in sight, so dry the mesquite trees are dying, and its hard to kill a mesquite.
record days

It will be from 108-110 in southwest MO today...Corn is gone with beans soon to follow..Lots are feeding hay..

We live with over 100 degree days from beginning in june till some time in september usually. This is at 1200 foot elevation in the Valley of the Sun,Arizona. Our comfort is shade ,AC and Evaporative coolers. Now our humidity uaually is none existant so we all learn to cope, however when the Monsoon season arives as it did last week with 40% Humidity levels it was very uncomfortable. Sure ,it is vwery hot when the temps are over 100" and the humidity is 95%. That is a Killer combination.I"ve been to Oklahoma and Illinois and Kentucky and other midwest states when the conditions I mentioned were present and all I can say is I"m sorry for all this freakish weather that is going on but chin up,it will change and hopefully for the better.

You know it's pretty hellish conditions when the mesquites are dying.

I was driving from Palestine to Corsicana this weekend and you can spot allot of dead trees in the timber line. A few places look like fall has begun.

We have had two dogs that were very well cared for die in the past month. We did everything, the heat was just too much. One was a Poodle mix, the other a Border Collie.

Things being that bad; How do the roads in your area look? Are they totally falling apart. Including Interstate, & US highways.

Nancy sent me an email today and gave instructions on adding electrolytes to the horses" water.

Went back out to the shop for a measuring cup and the JD thermometer was at 116o and the other one was at 114o.

Put one cup of Apple Elite Electrolyte in their water tub.

Outside for about 10 minutes and have "sweated down" my overalls.

Hey [b:654c4848f0]Vito[/b:654c4848f0].

Nancy and I correspond via email.

Surprisingly enough the wireless connection works great here at the farm.

I still visit the YT forums a couple of times each day.

Only getting one digital channel on TV today so decided to catch up on the YT gossip.

Hope temps are much cooler in your neck-of-the-woods.

You're exactly right. You sweat so hard, you're body can't keep up. Be sure you take frequent water breaks to give your body a chance to catch up and re-hydrate.

No basements. Ground dries out & shifts. Walls crack and sometimes the slab.

James is not a horse person, but will do what he can.

I sent him an email today and asked him to find the horses' electrolytes and add to their water. They can lose salt faster than they can replenish it by licking a salt block. They can even get sores on their tongues from licking when the weather is like this.

We're not feeding hay yet, but that may be coming.

James,
Thanks for the response.Temperatures have been seasonal overall.Only one bad spell with temps @ 100 with high humidity.I hope it breaks for you soon. That is killing heat you have.

Vito

i have corn starting to curl on the gravel ridges. temps are running 5-10 degrees above average, and the rain that wouldn't stop from spring into mid-june, now can't get started. still, i think we are better off than texas and much of the south.

For the horses you might get one of those fans that you hook a garden hose to.
When I lived in TX I always wondered why they thought it was a good idea to pass out fans in the heat. A fan in Tx is just a space heater.
