it all comes back.....

got a neighbor that has been pretty underhanded since I've got here. Nothing really bad, just little stuff like calling the cops when mud fell out of my fenderwell on the side of the street, dogs barked a little, or just whenever he felt like complaining............... Got a storm on the way and he's got hay down and asked me to run thru and bale his when I do mine tomorrow (50 ft away).... Was so shocked that he'd even have the balls to ask that I just said OK, buck a bale..... He jumped on it and was fine til he made a couple calls then called me and said he found someone else that was cheaper and he didn't need me...... There are 3 balers in the area. His someone else's baler is broke and they asked to borrow mine.....

Told them where they could borrow a forage wagon....

I like my people skills...............

Should of told him "sure you can, but I'll need to charge you 50 cents for each bale you do for wear and tear:.

Now he'll be calling the cops if you so much as look in his direction...

I second M B - don't borrow out your baler unless you don't care about it.

Seems like your people skills are just about on par for the situation. I don't blame ya one bit for being a little PO'd.

I'd tell 'em they could borrow the baler....for TWO bucks a bale. My people skills are worse than yours apparently.

I think you were "spot on"- both with this deal, and the horse tire kickers a few posts ago.

Had a neighbor who came with hat in hand one time- middle of haying season, their baler jumped time and baled a good portion of itself, could they borrow my baler? Well, I've still got hay to bale myself. No problem- we'll bale all the rest of your hay, just tell us when its ready, we'll work it in with ours. OK- give them the baler. They do as promised- got my hay (and theirs) up in good shape, returned the baler in good shape (and a nice bottle of Jack, to boot). Handshakes all around.

Couple months later I go down and ask to borrow their backhoe for a couple of hours.
"Oh, I'm sorry, we don't loan out our equipment."
"Well, you weren't very shy about borrowing my baler."
"We'd have respected your decision if you declined to loan it- but some folks loan and others don't."
As I left I told them "You've made a believer out of me, that's for sure."

I'm like the rest of the guys. I don't borrow or loan equipment but I might come help someone out if they aren't complete jerks about it.

Good neighbours nnalert the a$$hole next door every time. I have some of the best neighbours going and feel they would say the same.

Sadly there are many people that figure their needs are more important than yours. They'll borrow everything but the kitchen sink and sometimes you'll have to fix something just so they can use it. Flip the page and want to borrow something from them and you'd think you asked them to take a bullit for you. I've had that happen a few times.

(quoted from post at 12:02:53 08/02/11) You've had people take a bullit for you?

Heck, I'd give them the baler before I took a bullet. I'm kinda shy about borrowing things, I'd feel real bad if I broke something. Plus it gives me a reason to go buy a new toy!!!! :D

I was a little put out at the time, but in the long run, we remained friends. I actually benefitted considerably by the deal, because I had used up my vacation from work, and would have had to rake and bale after work- was great to have them bale for me, so I could rake or mow the next field in the evenings. Also, they were great "maintainers"- did some fixing on the baler (some new teeth in the pickup, etc.).

No, but I've had people borrow things from me and when I asked to borrow something from them, I might as well of asked them to take my place in the line of fire.
