Sickle Mower Question

I have no sickle mower experience, but have one way back in the barn. I need to thin out the grapevines to improve air flow in the vineyard and was wondering if a sickle mower works, or can be made to work, in a vertical position. It would sure save a lot of time...

All depends which one you have. If all of the working parts is outside the breaking point, it'll work. Might be better if you stated which kind of mower you had. I have a NH and it will work anywhere I put it. Might have to put some kind of stable bar to hold it where you need it.

If your mower has a pitman stick, no. If it is pitmanless or Balance head then yes.

If is a JD, it would need to be a No 10 or later. They have a wobble head, no pitman.
If the sickle bar on a pitman type sickle gets too high, the pitman will break.

I'd bet it's for the Farmall Cub, if that helps.

If it's for a Cub, it has a pitman and will not work in an upright position.
