Thanks guys for all the input. I think I am going to look for a gas job. I had a 5.4 in the 1997 that I wrecked and it was a good motor but I hear on some of the newer ones that spark plugs pop out or break off when you go to take them out. Any thoughts on the 5.4 V8 or the V10.Thanks
Bob

Most say the V10 is as good as the diesels for pulling- but very thirsty; I wouldn't get one unless you need the power for pulling.

It is the earlier 5.4 engines that do that, up to and some of, 2003 models.

I have used the V10 to pull a gooseneck, and it does a good job, fuel economy was near 10 with 25k on the trailer.

hi--i have a 250 with the 5.4 sitting at the shop with a head gasket/head problem. it has
82k miles and has been great uptill now. it was never run hot or abused. its a 03. looking around comp. others have had issues--head gaskets
and like you said, broken plugs, shooting the plugs right out of head. i'm not a happy person.

My '04 F250 with the 5.4 hasn't had a single problem yet, 110,000 miles.

It isn't something I would consider powerful though and it get terrible mileage, 11 to 12 most of the time.

has been dependable though

Everyone I've talked to with a V10 is very happy with the power, if you pulling a lot it will do well. They do use fuel, but I have heard all kinds of mpg from 7-8 to 11-12. I'd believe more towards the lower end of those. As for the 5.4 the earlier, 2 valves were the ones that had the spark plug blowing out issues, wouldn't say it was an epidemic. about 98-02 were the head gasket oil leak years. The 04 to about 07 or so have the ridiculous design spark plugs that are a b%tch to get out.Thats the 5.4 3V version, pretty good power and if you take it to someone who knows what he is doing they can usually get the plugs out with mininal catastrophe. Just keep in mind the plugs list for $25 apiece. Personally I reccomend leaving them alone unless you have an issue. For the most part they are very reliable engines.

Being I work at a Ford New Car store, all I will
say is... Be Very Very Very Carefull when
working/changing the spark plugs in ANY 5.4..
If you have 100K on a 5.4 & the sparkplugs have
never been out, good chance they won't come out
without breaking. My Best advice is Copper never
sease on the plugs & remove them every 20,000 &
add more neversease.... Don't hafta install new
plugs just coat the threads..

The sign of a good company is one that will step up to the plate, admit they put out a faulty product, and attempt to make arrangements to mitigate the damages. It would cost them millions of dollars to do the right thing, but would seal their fate for the future as being THE best automotive company. Instead, they pour those millons and millions of dollars in to flukely TV ads with currently popular TV personalities that no one will even know a few years from now.
Those marketing companies that sell these overpriced and mostly fake TV ads must have some great sales people or pictures of someone at the automotive company doing bad things to a goat.

I have an '08 F350 with the 5.4. I pull a skid loader and a John Deere G with it (seperatly of course). It does the job fine, just takes a little longer and is definitly not overpowered. On the highway, unloaded, I've gotten 15mpg out of it, but general driving it's more like 13.5. Between company trucks and personal trucks, this is my 4th 5.4, and the only problems I ever have are exhaust manifolds warping, I think from them heating up towing trailers over our mountains. I've changed the manifolds on both sides of every truck I've had except this last one. I don't even mind doing it anymore. My Uncle bought an '08 F350 with the v10. His milage is 11.5-12 with a lot of stop and go driving checking cows. I know of a 99 v-10 with over 350,000 miles and still going. As little as my personal truck gets driven, I would have rather had the v10 now, and traded the 1-2mpg difference for a more power.

rla is exactly right. Be very careful of the plugs breaking off in the head. I can name about 8 trucks that I know of at the momment that have had that happen to them at least once. As for the V10, I know people on both sides. Some say they pull good and don't get that bad on milage and others say they don't pull hardly anything and get terrible milage.
