OT--Interesting (unusual) Truck exhaust condition

I have owned a 2001 Ford Ranger XLT extended cab "off road" 4X4 truck since 2004 that now has 80K miles.

The exhaust tailpipe has always been clean on the inside to the point of receiving NO smut when dragging a finger through it! It looks the same inside as outside. There are NO exhaust leaks.

There was a "cruise control" recall and upon completion I showed the tec. my tail pipe and he was amazed. He even took pictures of the pipe and showed three other mechanics.

The shop forman wants me to bring the truck in for inspection :?: :?:

I might add that this is the first vehicle I have ever owned, that gets better then the EPA window sticker suggestion. :)

It is a 4L V6 and gets an overall average of 19.3 combined average over 1,000 miles.

I think I will keep it!

stand there while they look at it to make sure they don"t put their hands in it and change anything. then you might get 15. back in the carb days, lady had car go over 21mpg, ford asked her to bring in, said had wrong carb, put new one no charge, then she only got 14mpg...couldn"t find org carb to put back on, sneaky dealers.....

forgot to add, i have a 2001 explorer, get around 18, sometimes up to 20, dependinmg or rear-end ratio, around 2000rpm less is where i get the besst mpg...

My Ranger has linited slip 3.55 defferential. [b:c8562a9834](edit) I was mistaken, it has a 4.10[/b:c8562a9834] I might add that, in my opinion, there is only ONE true way to check mileage.
Drive the vehicle normally for at least 1,000 miles. Starting with a full tank, keep up with gal. used and divide your mileage by the number of gal.
I do this at least two times with each vehicle.

Like Jiles says, I check my fuel consumtion over 1000 miles, keeping check on how much I put in the tank.Over the last 3000 miles my Land Rover Discovery with the BMW 5 cylinder diesel engine, has given a consistent 34 mpg, cruising at about 1800-2000 RPM. Diesel Britain is about $10.00 per gallon.

Hoof Print is rite Do not let the dealer touch your rig , I will not be the same as before. In my 60+ yrs of dealing with Ford dealers , Never, never trust them . Have had first hand expierence . It was costly . clint

Don't know if it's just stories or not, but I hear tell of wrong chip or parts getting into USA vehicles, much more mph but wrong EPA settings - get a Europian part in the USA vehicle.

If such stories are true, dealer might want to 'fix' your pickup to USA standards as mentioned?

Probaly just baseless internet stories.

If I owned a vehicle that gave exceptional fuel mileage, the dealership would NOT get their grubby hands on it! Just because they want to look at it does not mean it is mandatory.
As Bob stated, I too, have heard of vehicles getting exceptional gas mileage. I heard of a Chevrolet like that, the dealer tried to tell the person that it was an experimental carburetor that the factory had neglected to remove. He told them that was not his problem and if they wanted to keep their fingers intact, they had better not touch it.

Those "wrong carburetor" stories went around for years. Somebody got a car that got twice the mileage as everyone else and the factory called the car back, saying it was a new carb that shouldn't have gotten to the public.

Like Henry Ford II said at the time, "If such a carburetor existed, why would we keep it secret? Just think of what we could do to GM in one year!"

My thoughts exactly---My truck is not exceptional, just above average. Being a retired Certified Auto Mechanic I have heard many stories. With some vehicles, everything just works together better and will perform and get better MPG.
My window sticker EPA estimate is 15 city and 19 hwy. When I checked my mileage, it was mostly in town---I have never taken a long trip in this truck and have no idea what it would get on the highway.
I don't drive like that so it means little to me.
My point for this post is the UNUASALLY CLEAN INTERIOR EXHAUST, not a brag for MPG.
Although I have no intentions of letting the dealer inspect my truck, he informed me that they just wanted to check the exhaust emissions, because they had never seen this exhaust condition before.

Most Rangers didn't have 3:55 gearing and ran higher RPMS. We had a 2000 Exployer, 4.0 SOHC At 55 we got about 23, at 70 dropped to 19. At the same time my FIL had a 98, 4.0 that ran a couple of hundred RPMS less at a given speed. I know form several long trips that he got better mileage than we did.

I just got my paper work out and discovered something I didn't know.I was mistaken, the ranger has a 4.10 limited slip defferential. cost $295.00
I failed to mention it has a 5 speed Automatic transmission

Jiles, I have the same year and same options in a 4dr Ranger. I used to get 20.5 mpg on a long trip, but since Mo. mandated ethanol in fuel I only get 19.5 on a trip. Mine has 78k, and the exhaust is the same as yours. One note, some of them were rated for a 5500 pound trailer and have F150 transmissions. Mine is one of them, and yours may be also.
