Perkins Diesel in Cat Forklift

I would like to identify the Perkins diesel in a Cat R85 Forktruck. Is there a data plaque or a cast number I can reference? It is a nonturbo 4 cyl. Thanks Aaron

Its a hard starting SOB, but it runs good when you get it warmed up. Owner has been buying engine parts from Cat and was surprised to hear that it was a Perkins. I just couldn't tell him which engine it was.

Thanks

Aaron

fuel may bee leaking off some of them Perkins had a cheap o ring set up and they would come lose and bleed off the fuel but not leak fuel

The primary reason they are so hard starting is no timing advance and a high static timing. They avoid using a timing advance mechanism to save money and set the static timing to 30 degrees BTC which gave good rated fuel consumption. Would start a whole lot better with say 21 degrees static and 9 degree advance. Sixteen degrees static probably even better, but fuel pump drive mechanical gear advances are more limited than what can be done on a distributor. When diesels went to electronic control anything was possible, but by this time the emission requirements were the driving issue.

I call them catskins.I got a 3054

Should be a perkins sticker on the block close to the bell housing inj pump side.
or a Cat sticker on the timing cover and/or valve cover

If it is a 3054 PerkiPillar then check the glow plugs. I've been working on them for nearly 112 years not, though several variations, and they are all a royal PITA to get started when cold if the plugs aren't working.

As far as which Perkins it is, by my understanding, there is no exact cross to a true Perkins model. Even so you typically get a complete, custom, rebuild kit, under Perkins part numbers, just like you would a true Perkins. That said, give the guys at Engine Power Source a call. I've rebuilt a few of the 3054's over the years and the last time I called them about doing one they had finally gotten enough info on the CAT engines to start crossing things over to the true Perkins products/model numbers, and making up rebuild kits, etc, etc. In other words those guys are good when it comes to the PerkiPillars.
