does anyone know if a marine batt. can be used in place of a regular 12 volt batt. in an extended time frame without causeing any problems to the batt. or other elct. components? "In tractors". Thanks Sam
 
The John Deere 520 back home has a 12v Deep Cycle battery. Most lead acid battery life is inversely related to how far you draw down or cycle the battery before recharging. Deep cycles are designed to maintain the life better when drawn clear down like when a trolling motor is attached all day.
 
As Russ has already told you, it depends upon which type of marine battery you have.

Both deep cycle and marine starting batteries are available. A marine starting battery is little different froom any other starting battery and can be used indefinitely in your tractor.

A deep cycle battery is designed for repeated deep cycle discharge/recharge cycles rather than starting duty and its life will be affected if used in other types of service. Doing so will not damage other tractor components, however, and it will start your tractor in most circumstances.

NO a deep cycle battery will not last as long in a tractor etc unless you do not have a charging system that work. If you use it in/on a tractor with a bad/poor charging system yes it will work ok but if the system works well the battery will not last near as long since a deep cycle battery is made to be discharged to almost dead then charged back up. Yep BTDT and found ya they work but do not last very long
 
The battery will work ok in the tractor if it has enough cca and there is not too much vibration shaking the lead of the plates. A deep cycle battery is able to take more deep discharge cycles than an auto battery, but its life will still be shorted.
I think this is the first time I have ever disagreed with old.
I think nicad batteries are the ones that like to be completely discharged.
