Japanese Beetles

We grow U-Pick / We-Pick blueberries in SW MO. We were buried in Jap, beetles in 2009, lost large part of the crop, and thought it would be worse every year. But didn't have any this year. Anybody have similar experience?

The first year we saw them it looked like an Egyptian plague. They have been mild to moderate every year since.

You didn't have ANY? We have about 50' of thornless blackberries here by our house, I've been able to keep them at bay picking them off the plants. At another garden patch a couple of miles away, we put in a 135' row of blackberries this spring, I've seen a few. At both patches, the beetles got on okra, and green beans, also. Sevin took care of them on those crops, but I didn't spray the berries. Mark

In Central Kentucky....we had them bad last year...but this year i have only seen a few on some flowering bushes.....none in the garden or on fruit trees...

I had them worse the last couple years vs this year. still have them only about 20% of what I had last year, not complaining

i thought you were going to tell us about their version of Ringo, John, Paul, George until i opened thread and realised it was vegetating bugs..lol

i still have them but not as bad as several years ago. i still need to keep all the fruit trees and berry bushes sprayed with sevin to keep them off. i have beetle traps set up at various spots around the farm. i use old 5 gallon plastic pails hooked to the bags to collect the beetles. i may try using the milky spore and spreading that in the ditches and grass ways to see if that will help.

Have had them BAD here for years and this year is no different...
Funny, they will not cross water..(mostly)..
The Scioto river is just West of me and my brother lives on the West side of the river and he has next to NONE..he never has had hardly any...!!
I tried setting up a floating beatle trap on my 1 1 1/3 ac lake..thought I'd have a great feeder for the fish..
The dumb beatles won't fly over water to get to the trap...!!!
Have had so many this year that the fish have stopped eating them, when I toss in a new batch I have caught off the Raspberries..!!
Oh-well, next thing will be the Geese coming in and feeding on the Soybeans..!!

Ron..

Yup, same stoy, use to have them all the time all over the place. And this year ive only seen two. maybe the dry weather did it. who knows.

Yours must have moved to our area. Worst infestation we've seen for many years. Very seriously considering spraying the beans. Apparently they will be active for a couple more weeks. Now need to start looking for aphids and red spider mites.
