Allis Chalmers WD45 Hand Clutch

I have a problem with my hand clutch on my WD45. I found a round bent ring on the clutch. I think it must be the snap ring. It makes a knocking noise while running until you step on the foot clutch. My question is can I replace the snap ring while the clutch is on or do I have to take it out? And if I have to take it out do I have to pull the engine or is there an easier way? Any help would be appreciated

If you pull the engine you need to loosen the side rails and pry them apart so you can move the foot clutch housing and torque tube fwd to get at the hand clutch. Or, if you can support the tractor well enough, unbolt the side rails at the differential, split at the hand clutch, and move everything fwd, intact. I&T AC-11 shows using long guide bolts to maintain alignment and facilitate reassembly.
