Today I went to St.Louis with some flowers ..
and on the way back ..
I seen J.D. combine with something on the BACK of it ... seen the 2nd one { on a truck going the other way } and I'm sure it's a BALER on the back side .. I think...
O.K. if it is a BALER ... do they run the stocks thur the combine ?? or are they just baling the husts and cobs ?

SORRY I didn't have my camera with me ...

deeres been workn a a way to bale corn stalks right behind the combine -- to use for ethnaul (sp) -- might of been what u seen

YES it was a combine w/o the head on it ... that's what I thought first time I saw one .. I have seen them before and wasn't able to see them good enough before ...
That's why when I seen the 2nd and 3rd one .. I slow down and look at it closer .. I'm sure I seen belts that look like baler ...
the back end of the combine look just like they added a baler ... w/o a hitch ..

Well, it wouldn't exactly be a NEW invention...

Baling right out of the back of the combine is about as good as it can get for the cellulosic ethanol folks. They actually only want the cob because it has the most energy but separating the cob from the husks is more complicated, so they settled on baling the cobs and the husks that come out of the back of the combine. They do not want the stalks and leaves nor do they want any dirt that might get in when the windrowed cob/husks are picked up off the ground with a regular baler. What's being baled now is what falls out of the back of the combine with the chopper removed, and whatever leaves that might be laying between the center two rows behind the combine. Last fall I sold a little over 500 big square bales of 'corn stover' to Poet for their first cellulosic ethanol plant. Jim

There is a huge farm in Australia that bales chaff right out of the combine in order to collect the weed seed. Could be catching on over here.

If it was a new combine it was probably a the corn cob seperator. I believe it is Vermeer that was working on that set up as well as IH. Kind of interesting. I have only seen videos nothing in person yet.
